We were lucky to catch up with Aubrey Kurita recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aubrey , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
“I have been working in the property management industry for over 20 years, starting at the age of 22 and continuing until I turned 43. During that time, I managed apartments and houses and excelled at my job. Despite the challenges of being a single mom, I was able to provide for my daughter thanks to my job.
However, things became difficult when my boss started to verbally abuse me. It was a constant source of stress that added to the already challenging situation at home. As a result, I made the difficult decision to quit my job last November.
Thankfully, my partner was there to support me. He encouraged me to pursue my true passion – interior design, party planning, decorating, and transforming things into beautiful works of art. With his support, I was able to quit my job, take our two little boys out of daycare, and start doing what I love.
It’s been a long time since I’ve dreamed of this opportunity, and I’m grateful to finally have the chance to pursue it. If I had the support of a second income when I was in my 20s, I would have jumped at the chance to follow my passion sooner. However, I’m happy to be doing it now and look forward to what the future holds.”

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
During my high school years, I discovered my passion for interior design, which I proved to be quite proficient at. For my senior project, I created a before-and-after video as well as a PowerPoint presentation for a house where I resided. Despite the challenges encountered, I remained committed to the project and continued working on small projects for my family’s events.
Subsequently, while serving as a manager for two apartment communities for my former employer, I took the initiative to submit a presentation detailing the cost of decorating both models during the budgeting period in 2022. I won the budget, and within six months, I completed both models by painting, ordering furniture and accessories, and putting everything together. This impressed my previous employer so much that they began calling on me to select colors and tiles for their other properties.
My former employer then offered me a job to redecorate one of their offices in Orange County, an opportunity that I saw as a chance to build my portfolio. I did not charge extra for this task, just my regular paycheck and lunch. I picked up a U-haul truck and spent two days with another manager selecting furniture and accessories. With the help of the office staff, we completed the redesign within two weeks, just in time for a significant walkthrough with the Head Honcho.
I have since branched out on my own and specialize in event receptions, luxury picnics, and charcuterie boards. As a detail-oriented and hardworking individual, I remain committed to fulfilling my clients’ dreams.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am determined to broaden my knowledge and expertise in the field of marketing. Although I possess a flair for aesthetics and have a talent for working hard to the bone. I am aware that the key to success lies in acquiring the ability to entice customers and maximize sales. Therefore, I am striving to develop my skills in this area and am eager to explore effective marketing strategies and techniques.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There’s nothing more fulfilling than witnessing the genuine happiness and pure joy on people’s faces as they indulge in what I’ve created. The smiles that light up their faces and the contentment they express are the ultimate rewards for me. Knowing that I’ve played a part in creating these moments of pure bliss is what motivates me to keep creating and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
