We were lucky to catch up with Marina Boswell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
At Model Behavior Buffalo, our mission is clear: to make modeling and high fashion content accessible to everyone. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the excitement of creative photoshoots, regardless of their background or appearance. Inspired by my own journey in modeling and a love for enjoyable photoshoots, I often heard statements like “I can’t do that, I’m not a model.” It was these words that drove me to found Model Behavior Buffalo and challenge the stereotype that high fashion is exclusive. Our brand is more than just about taking pictures; it’s about fostering confidence and empowerment in each individual. Through personalized experiences, we celebrate uniqueness and help boost self-assurance. My goal is to showcase the beauty and potential in every person, reshaping the traditional idea of what it means to be a ‘model.’

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Marina, and I’m a model turned photographer, creative director, and content influencer based in Upstate New York. From a young age, I’ve been fascinated by the entertainment world. My modeling journey began as a hobby at 17 and blossomed into remarkable experiences, including runway shows, magazine covers, and commercials. After college, I immersed myself in creativity, organizing photoshoots, and collaborating with local professionals in my community. This journey led me to establish Model Behavior Buffalo—a photography and creative direction business. We specialize in high fashion, beauty, and branding photoshoots, catering to both enthusiasts and those serious about modeling, with personalized creative direction services. What distinguishes us is our dedication to delivering high fashion quality in a smaller market, complemented by a personal touch that ensures every client feels valued. I take immense pride in the supportive community we’ve cultivated at Model Behavior Buffalo. Seeing individuals leave our studio feeling more confident is incredibly gratifying. My aspiration for Model Behavior Buffalo is to redefine the concept of ‘modeling’ and establish a safe space and agency for those keen on pursuing modeling opportunities.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes, my side hustle evolved into my full-time business and career. It all began during my modeling journey, where I found myself surrounded by other creatives and eager to learn more about different fields, particularly photography. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to learn from a highly talented photographer who was a close family friend. Under their tutelage, I honed my skills and developed a passion for photography.
In 2020, I reached a turning point when I realized that my full-time desk job wasn’t fulfilling my creative aspirations. Despite lacking business owner experience and not having many people in my life who ran steady businesses, I made the bold decision to quit my job and dive headfirst into photography. However, the transition wasn’t easy. I took on part-time jobs to fund my business while I learned and paid my bills.
Although my part-time jobs gradually turned into full-time commitments, my true passion for photography never faded. Yet, I found myself struggling to prioritize my business amidst the demands of a full-time job. It was a tough realization that I needed to take another leap of faith and quit my secure job to pursue my passion wholeheartedly.
Navigating this journey without a safety net was daunting, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Despite the challenges, Model Behavior Buffalo is now my full-time career. What started as a leap of faith has exceeded my expectations. Even in just half a year of dedicating myself fully to my passion, I’ve accomplished more than I imagined. Every day, I get to pour my heart into something I love, and that’s the most rewarding feeling of all.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My main source of new clients has been pouring into the community and nurturing the small pool of clients I had in the beginning. Referrals have consistently been my primary source of clientele. Despite studying marketing in college and brainstorming various strategies like social media, advertising, discounts, and networking events, I’ve realized that I am my biggest resource.
The experience I provide is unparalleled and cannot be duplicated. It’s this personalized touch that prompts my clients to recommend me to their family, friends, and colleagues. While traditional advertising may attract attention, nothing beats the conversion rate of a trusted individual raving about their experience with me. Professional photography is often considered a luxury, and the genuine recommendations of satisfied clients carry more weight than any advertisement.
