We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Ranney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
I have taken Skyline Tree Service over from my father who started the company in 1988. Some things I value most about my father are the lessons he taught me about thinking ahead, keeping me accountable, and sending me to countless industry training events. Over the years of working with my dad, he would ask me what the next 3 steps, the next 5 steps, and the next 15 steps were to see if I understood what was going on with job flow. It was not until one day when I told him I knew the next 8 steps, but a variable of when another employee finishes a task will dictate the following steps. He looked at me with a proud eye and said “You are becoming an excellent crew leader”. I have come to the understanding as a second-generation owner that not only was my father thinking about the job flow for the day, but also was thinking days and years ahead for where he wanted his company to grow.
I value my father’s commitment to the trees. In some cases working a long day I wanted to speed things up and cut corners to get home faster, shorting the tree of care and what the client is paying for. He would remind me to be accountable for what services we are providing and to complete them with 100% effort since our motto is “every tree needs a care taker”.
Lastly, I am so fortunate my father invested in my arboricultural education by sending me to countless industry trainings. These trainings are where I met a lot of people in the industry that I still have connections with today and allowed me to become a trainer for the IL arborist association.

Andrew, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Andrew Ranney a second-generation owner of Skyline Tree Service established in 1988. I have been doing tree care since I could pick up my first stick and bring it to the woodchipper. Growing up in a family tree care business my weekends and summers were full of tree work operations. As I grew older and it was time to go to college, I figured I would do what I already knew and went to Urban Forestry school at Southern IL University. Since graduating in 2019 I have been focused on bringing our family company to a new level with robotic tree removal. We are the only tree care company in Northern Illinois with a knuckle-boom crane that can unfold 104 feet, grab and cut tree portions! We call our machine “Sky-Mek”! At Skyline we strive to provide top-notch tree and plant health care services to our clients.
“Every Tree Needs A Caretaker”.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Keeping the tree as the top priority has built us a great relationship in our market. Clients know that we are not just doing treework for a paycheck, but to care for the trees.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for us has been our “Ask an Arborist” booth where we attend local events like festivals, parades, home shows and art shows. We have found that a lot of people have simple questions that can easily be answered by me in real-time. This then allows me to offer a free on-site evaluation with them. With them having already met me and had a few questions answered
