We were lucky to catch up with Karen Hong recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Karen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?

As an artist, I find lots of joy in being able to connect with others through my work. I use art to share my personal stories and my love for animals, and it’s such a fulfilling feeling when someone else finds joy in them too. Ten years ago, the idea of pursuing a career as a full-time illustrator seemed like a distant possibility, but I guess I proved myself wrong! While there are challenges and uncertainties that come with pursuing a creative career, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

It’s a special, warm feeling when people tell me that my art makes them smile or makes them feel seen.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

This may sound too simple, but I just love to draw! Art is such a part of who I am and if I were to separate myself from it, I’d feel empty and lost.
