We recently connected with Roscelle Griffin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Roscelle, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am pretty much a self taught photographer. I learned a lot of what I know now from watching YouTube videos, reading articles and leaning on my peers. Occasionally, I will sign up for live zoom calls held by other professionals in my field and attend classes related to different topics.
I learned photography at a pretty decent pace. I go out and practice as much as I can but I probably could have networked more early on to speed up the process. This industry is one where you never stop learning or practicing so it’s important to establish relationships and stay on top of current trends and new technology.
Learning lighting and how to operate my camera are extremely important. I feel that lighting is everything and as you walk into many different situations, it’s essential that you understand how to adapt and come prepared with the proper equipment.
Not only is it important to understand the concepts of taking a good photo but having the proper equipment for different events is just as crucial. Early on, I did not have the ability to purchase the best lenses or camera gear but as I got better at my craft, I saved and was able to upgrade and saw a tremendous difference in the quality of my work. Expensive equipment is not all you need but it does make your life easier when it comes to editing and having the ability to produce great images.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a small town, Johnson City, Tennessee. From an early age I always liked taking photos. I played sports growing up and earned a full scholarship and played division I basketball at Auburn and the University of Louisville. After graduation, I held a couple of jobs in sports and then transitioned into the financial services industry. I have worked in the retirement plan area now for over 20 years. I am currently a project manager at Fidelity Investments while also doing photography part-time. I mostly photography events and my passion is sports photography. I gravitated to sports due to my love for basketball.
I am most proud of my new website that I launched in January 2024. It provides a platform for me to display my work in a professional manner and easily share it with everyone. In addition to photographing sports, I also enjoy real estate, headshot, corporate events and much more. I pride myself on getting images back to clients quickly. I also like to have fun and enjoy meeting new people. 502 Media Now was created to capture memories in a unique way and to tell a story with every image.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is the response I get from clients when they see their images. There are times where I have photographed athletes that have never had a professional image taken of them. I love to see people’s faces light up when I’ve captured an image of them that they feel showed them in a great light. Without clients we would not have a business and it makes me happy when my clients are happy.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to capture moments in unforgettable ways. I want people to have the chance to look back at the images I create and tell a story.
