We recently connected with Jasmine Gill and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jasmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Deciding to become a comedian was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Comedy has changed my life in ways that I can’t even express. To be able to bring joy and laughter to those in the in such a dark time is truly a blessing and I didn’t realize that I possess that gift until maybe five years ago. As in any art form you have to have be dedicated, be willing to practice, Come to the conclusion that it will not happen overnight and that everyone’s journey is different. Also know that no matter how great you are there is always room for improvement. One of my favorite things to do during comedy is study myself see how I move on the stage how I interact with the audience, timing, laughed per minute and so much more. I know that as of today I am a great comedian but I cannot wait to see where I will be in 10 years. I started comedy in 2016 and the growth that I have seen over these past eight years is amazing I am super proud to call myself a comedian.

Jasmine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Have you ever felt like you were destined for something greater. So in 2016 I was working three jobs and really had no idea what I was supposed to be doing with my life. People have always told me that I was funny but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. Around the age of 25 I kept asking my Mom “What’s my purpose here?” One day I was just sitting in my room from working 13 hours straight and I just looked up and said to God I know I am here for more than this. And out of NOWHERE something told me to look up open mics, so I googled local open mics and I found Coffee Underground my first time ever performing was July 11, 2016 and I never looked back. When I am under those stage lights and that microphone is in my hand I know my purpose of life is being fulfilled and I cannot think of any better way to live than to be walking in your life’s purpose.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
A life where people are going through some of the hardest times they’ve ever experience and then to be able and come in and I can help you temporarily escape whatever pain sadness fear you have been dealing with it for at least 45 minutes to an hour you totally forget about that that’s one of the greatest feelings in the world. I have told comedy to almost Every demographic you can think of children to the elderly and everyone in between, people less fortunate, people who are well off. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, or other, it doesn’t matter. For that brief moment in time we’re all laughing at the same thing relating to the same issues. To be able to bring everyone together under that umbrella of comedy is a beautiful thing to see.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Having talent is great but it is not enough in 2024. I always thought my talent will speak for itself and that the right people will see me and everything would line up and it would take off, because I’m super talented right, absolutely not. It is hard trying to pursue your dreams and things don’t go for you the way you want and still wake up and chase after them every single day. Social media has became so incorporated in the comedy scenes that numbers play a large role in certain opportunities. Unfortunately I don’t really have the numbers and in some peoples eyes you’re not a valid comic if you don’t have those numbers behind you. I never cared about social media before I started my Comedy career I didn’t even have it. But as I started my comedy journey it’s like you have to be out here people have to be able to contact you. I shine my best when I am on stage unfortunately I haven’t quite figured out the content creating yet. I do believe that may hinder me from gaining some opportunities but it’s totally OK because as mentioned earlier everything is a journey and everyone moves at a different rate and I’m just trying to figure out my voice in the content creator world. Major kudos to everyone creator who has figured it out. I personally know at least six people who are very big on social media and they are great at what they do . there is definitely a difference between being a standup comedian and being a content creator , I just wish bookers and comedy clubs would also look at people who are doing comedy in the traditional route as well. But it still won’t stop me from being great I will find my way.
