We recently connected with Malachi Hinton and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Malachi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
Corporate America often overlooks the significant potential of the equestrian sector, particularly in show jumping. This high-caliber sport boasts a substantial following and mirrors other elite, billion-dollar industries such as Formula One, Golf, and Tennis. Luxury and lifestyle brands like Rolex, Longines, Hermès, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, and Lugano Diamonds, alongside high net-worth families, are deeply involved in this sphere. Show jumping is not only experiencing a surge in growth through lucrative brand marketing and endorsement deals but is also gaining traction in mainstream media with coverage from ESPN and NBC. This visibility opens the door to numerous competitive opportunities, some with seven-figure stakes. Despite its rich heritage as an elite sport, many outside the industry remain unaware of the vast business, competition, and marketing prospects available in show jumping.
Malachi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Malachi Hinton, and I am a USA Professional Equestrian Show Jumping Athlete from Newport News, VA, now based in Wellington, FL (the premier hub for elite-level show jumping in North America). With over 17 years of experience, I have ascended from grassroots to the highest level of the national circuit, including team selection and qualification for the 2016 USA Junior National Championships. As the owner of Rhema Sporthorses, a sport horse investment and show jumping team, I am committed to competing at the pinnacle of the sport, with aspirations to represent Team USA in major competitions including the Pan American and Olympic Games, specifically targeting the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
In line with my ambitions, I am seeking partnerships with additional team owners, similar to the models seen in Formula One and NASCAR, to expand the reach and impact of Rhema Sporthorses. My involvement in the sport is not only a game-changer but also of historical significance, aiming to address the longstanding lack of diversity within equestrian sports. Inspired by trailblazers like the Williams Sisters, Tiger Woods, and Lewis Hamilton, I am driven to pave the way for future diverse athletes in show jumping.
Additionally, my equestrian career has provided me with extensive knowledge of the real estate market, particularly luxury and equestrian properties in South Florida. As a licensed realtor, I specialize in helping clients navigate the complexities of buying, selling, and investing in real estate with a keen eye for both historical and modern architecture. My dual expertise in equestrian sports and real estate allows me to uniquely assist athletes, business professionals, and investors in finding properties that meet their specific needs efficiently and effectively.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While my passion for horses, talent in show jumping, and dedication have propelled my athletic career, the journey has been anything but easy. As a sport traditionally dominated by the affluent and marked by a significant lack of diversity, I’ve encountered numerous barriers along the way. From facing racism and prejudice in my youth to battling persistent doubts from others, my career has been a mix of significant highs and challenging lows. However, success in this sport demands resilience; each obstacle I’ve overcome has taught me valuable lessons and made every victory all the more meaningful.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One crucial lesson I’ve had to unlearn is the belief that success in show jumping is exclusively for those from affluent backgrounds or merely a matter of luck or chance for others. From the very beginning, my path in this sport has diverged from the traditional narratives. Although I lacked the privilege of daily one-on-one training, I cherished every learning opportunity I did have. I augmented my skills by meticulously observing from the sidelines, studying top professionals through online resources and literature, and riding a diverse range of horses (from the exceptionally talented to the more challenging). This approach not only honed my skills but also taught me the importance of relentless self-improvement and embracing the uniqueness of my own journey. I have learned to be comfortable with being different, understanding that this uniqueness enhances the richness of my experience and makes my success all the more rewarding. I firmly believe that my continued achievements in this sport will stem not from mere luck or chance, but from my steadfast faith and belief in God’s plan for my life.
