We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emilia Sadeghi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emilia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I had already worked in the field of commercial arts for over 25 years as a creative director. My degree was in design and advertising from UCLA School of Design. When I reached my late thirties, I decided to take courses in the Fine Arts. I had always wanted to work full time as a painter. I come from a background of many talented painters in my family and knew that I would be successful at it.
I was very lucky to live close to one of the top junior colleges in the states known for offering university-level Fine Arts program. I took every class offered in drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture.
Since I had a background in managing art and design studios for various companies, I felt that, now in my late forties, I could handle running my own business. I rented a studio space and got started. I was still accepting some small freelance work as a designer for some income but my focus was on creating my Fine Art to submit to galleries and become a full time working artist.
Building a series of comprehensive work takes time.
While working long hours on developing my paintings and sculptures, I was offered a freelance position as the creative director for a Tech company. Now in my late 40’s, developing my very costly bronze sculptures, I decided that I would only work for a few months to use the money for developing my sculptures. After a few months, I was offered a full time job at the same company. Sadly, I took the easy route of settling for a good salary and instead of working hard for myself, I made someone else more successful. I tried to work two shifts and continued with creating my art. I did exhibit and won various awards locally and nationally but I could not dedicate all my time and energy to my own business.
I finally stepped away from the director position which took all my energy, time and inspiration.
Now, I am working full time at my art and I have been very successful at selling my paintings and building up my career as an artist.
Looking back, I regret that I did not trust building my career as an artist when I was younger.
I regret that I did not allow myself the time needed to build my business sooner.
Emilia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up in a family of artists, my passion for the arts was ignited at a young age. I pursued my artistic journey by earning a BA from UCLA School of Design and dedicating over 35 years to professional work as a creative director and designer.
As a painter, I specialize in creating contemporary art that celebrates the beauty of nature and life itself. My paintings, crafted in acrylics and multi-media on medium to large canvases, showcase a blend of abstract and figurative-abstraction styles, aiming to spark conversations about joy, spirituality, and the wonders of existence.
Through my extensive years of professional experience as a creative director collaborating with executives and corporations, I offer expert design services to the home decor industry, architects, and interior designers.
Additionally, I produce sculptures primarily in bronze and bisque clay, ranging in size from small to medium, with weights varying from 30lbs to 150lbs. Each sculpture is elegantly displayed on its own marble base and is offered in limited editions or on a made-to-order basis.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As an artist in a highly competitive industry, I have built my reputation by consistently creating original and unique artwork. I prioritize delivering pieces of the highest standard, quality, and finish to my clients. Additionally, I actively seek out opportunities to showcase and promote my work in various venues to maximize exposure and reach a wider audience. This commitment to innovation, excellence, and proactive marketing strategies has been key in establishing my presence and reputation in the market.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During a challenging period of over seven consecutive months, I battled immune deficiency and a series of illnesses that significantly impacted my productivity as the sole artist and creator in my business. Faced with a drastic drop in production and overwhelming feelings of depression and hopelessness, I contemplated relinquishing my passion for recovery seemed out of reach. However, the thought of abandoning what I loved most felt like losing a part of myself. With no other choice but to persevere, I summoned the strength to keep going. It was during this difficult time that my latest creation, the “Gates of Paradise Series,” emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience, guiding me back to my artistic journey and instilling the determination to never give up.
