We recently connected with DAYNI BAKER and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DAYNI , thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
After the birth of my daughter and finding myself at home with a newborn and experiencing how isolating it can be, I finally understood how hard motherhood can be. I was always a lover of exercise and movement and had no trouble committing to my weekly training, but I now had to try and fit it in around my baby. I remember clearly the 4am alarm, creeping out of the house to try and fit in a workout before my daughter woke up. And after broken and little sleep!
At this point I wondered how mums fit it in at all. And when they did, how they trained efficiently to get the results they wanted.
I had the knowledge and expertise to put together an efficient and effective workout, and it was still hard!
From here, the idea for my women’s only strength training community was born. I wanted to create a safe space where women could come and train for 45 mins, gain training knowledge, and educate themselves on how to train with purpose- while bringing their children along if they wanted to.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Qualified MNU Evidence-Based Nutritionist and Strength Coach. I have been in the fitness industry for 20 years and love teaching people how to master their nutrition and exercise in a way that is sustainable and enjoyable for them.
I found my love for training and lifting weights at 25 and from this entered my first body building competition after 2 years of training.
I was quite successful at my competing career- obtaining 2 state titles and then a 3rd and a 2nd national place.
Unfortunately for me, the severe dieting and training took its toll on my body and mindset, and I developed a very unhealthy relationship with food and exercise.
From this, my road to healing took place and I went on to study nutrition and then NLC mindset coaching so that I could help others on their path to finding a balanced place.
Personally, I have been weight training since 2003, and love what it has done for my body, strength, confidence and self-esteem. I also train in BJJ and love wake surfing on the weekends.
Being a business owner and a mother, so I know only too well how hard it can be to juggle the chaos and still make time for yourself, and ensure your health and nutrition are on track.
Without the right nutrition guidance, so many elements of your life become unsettled leading to weight gain/weight loss, poor energy, moodiness, digestive issues, poor immunity and even anxiety and depression.
We only have one vessel in this life and there’s no point having a long life if it is not a quality one!
For those interested in taking their nutrition to the top level I also work with athletes. This side of nutrition is mind blowing and you will learn all the benefits of tailoring sports specific nutrition to your chosen sport.
I’m also a qualified NLC mindset coach, as I believe our mindset really determines our destiny. I combine my knowledge in this, along with nutrition and exercise to help others find their path to a healthier and more fulfilling life.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Knowing that the reward comes from making a difference in others life. I love seeing others start to build more confidence and self-worth as they improve their health, fitness and mindset, and shift away from the patterns that have kept them stuck.
I also know there is a flow through effect, in that when you are looking after yourself and prioritizing your own needs you can show up as the best version of you for everyone and everything that is important to you.
To me that is why I do what I do. I am making a difference and helping others to live a better, more fulfilling life.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Before my current business, I owned a gym and nutrition business with my ex-husband. When the marriage broke down, I chose to walk away from our business with nothing and start again.
I did not want to pursue lengthy and expensive lawyer and court hearings, but rather I chose to get on with life and I believed I had the skills to build a business from scratch with the knowledge and belief I had in myself.
It was hard and exhausting, but I was able to build my business that way I wanted to and deliver the message I wanted, to new my clients.
It was also hard to say goodbye to a business I had poured my soul into!
It taught me a lot about hard work, not quitting, and believing that you are good enough.
