We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Philip McCollum. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Philip below.
Philip, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I do. I believe like most, having a passion that drives you, keeps you on the path. As teens, we are driven by influence since birth. Peer pressure. For me, I was in a big city. I was somewhat popular in my schools, which I attended a new one every year. Sometimes more than one school each year. It takes a toll on a young mind. Decisions made can have lasting effects. Since money makes the world go round, it is a necessity. Find a money hobbies and stick to them. As long as you enjoy what you do, you will never hate your job.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have enjoyed arts since I was young. Crafts, paintings, drawings, music, foods, culture from around the world.
I was into visual arts first. Bob Ross was my greatest influence. He taught the basics. I took an official class in highschool along with starting culinary and chorus.
Since having my first child at 14, I had to get a job in a restaurant at 15 and so began my cooking career which I invested most of my time. I wish I would have been vegan since birth because it would have excelled my work beyond what was available in non-vegan kitchens. I became a vegan only chef by 2019. That is also when I became a DJ and began learning from so many.
PhilSoLogical is getting booked for shows and festivals around NC. There are a lot of Ups and downs but it is worth every second. The feeling of seeing people groove and dance to the tunes I’m playing is delightful.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Give more people a chance. Support locals. Main stream artists are getting so much exposure and support that it feels like a impossible task to get anywhere. Local artists without management have to secure our own bookings, etc.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to use my platforms to show that there is a better way of life that doesn’t involve animal agriculture and speciesism. They have normalized violence so much that people look at other beings as inferior and objects.
I hope to bring awareness to all to end needless suffering for all beings on the planet.
P.L.U.R. (Peace Love Unity Respect) that isn’t selective.
