We recently connected with Zephaniah Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Zephaniah , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
In some ways, I think that starting my creative career sooner would have been better, but then I also processed that I don’t know what better really is when it comes to creativity. There are an endless amount of ways to determine when and how I started my creative career, and I think there are many others that would agree. My first-hand clap could have been the start of my career or maybe the first time I got a check for $1,000. So to answer the question I think I started as soon as I possibly could with all the resources and opportunities I’ve had.
Zephaniah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey there my name is Zephaniah “Zeph” Jones (just in case you missed it)! I’m a creative entrepreneur, musician, and instructor with a ton of care and consideration for the communities I serve. As a musician and Instructor, I get to perform for a living and share my understanding of music and creativity with those willing to learn about it. As the owner-operator of my business, Think All Be All Creative Arts Incubator, I get to assist other creatives and businesses in considering out-of-the-box ideas and avenues that introduce creatives into the workflow.
Through a host of consulting projects, collaborations, and a ton of volunteer work every day I get to help push various aspects of our community forward. Some of those projects include website design and management, research and development, team development, and community gardening. Skills that I’ve gathered over the years I get to share in big ways and see members of my community grow in space and take on opportunities they were otherwise not prepared for. In return, I get a community of people who support me and my endeavors as I continue to learn and invest.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn my way of doing things. There are so many things in life that I had a habit of depending on my skills to do and that has proven time and time again to be costly. Tons of people are equipped with the skills necessary to help further your goals if the energy and time are taken to invest in them as people. The most profound place to find out I was depending on my skills happened when I got just a little bit closer to God. From there the covers over my eyes were truly lifted.
God equips us all with strengths and weaknesses for a few key reasons. 1) so we can learn to trust him and keep faith in his plan for all things. 2) so that we learn to build community with others because no one is truly successful alone.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Several goals are driving me but I believe everything falls into these few thoughts: God’s plan, his purpose for me, the family I want to build, the community I’m here to serve, and the wisdom I can pass on now and later. Overall these ideals have brought me to places and people that I still wonder if I’m dreaming or not, and it’s just the beginning.
