We recently connected with Lesly Su and have shared our conversation below.
Lesly , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Being a business owner can be both rewarding and challenging. I am happy that it gives me the opportunity to pursue my passion and have control of my decisions, time, provide financial independence and a sense of accomplishment. However, being a business owner also comes with its own risks and responsibilities. It requires hard work, dedication and the ability to handle uncertainty and stress. It can be demanding and require long hours of work. Last couples of year were challenging for me in my personal life and I wondered what would be to have a regular job. Maybe find a job where I can have stability, steady income, set hours, etc. But limiting my freedom to make independent decisions and pursue my own ideas would be something that I don’t want to change.
At the end, whether you would prefer being a business owner or having a regular job depends on your individual preference, goal and specially circumstances.

Lesly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Lesly and I am the owner of Pikabu by Lesly Su. I live in San Diego with my twins, and they are 11 years old. I started my business 12 years ago and my first cake was for my Baby Shower where I decided to make my own cake. specialized in custom cakes, decorated cookies. I attended a Baking and Pastry program at COC and I also learned different techniques from other Cake decorators and Bakers in classes I attended in person or virtually.
I worked in tv shows such as “Cake Wars”, “Cupcake Wars”, and “Dr. Seus Baking Challenge” in Food Network and Amazon Prime Video. Last Christmas, I started teaching cookies decorating classes in San Diego and Los Angeles. I have been wanting to do this for the longest time and I am very happy I finally had the time to start this new adventure. My next cookie decorating class id for Mother’s Day.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think that what helped me build my reputation is creating stunning and visually appealing cakes. Also, my clients appreciate my artistic talent, attention to detail and the ability to bring their vision to life. My cakes and cookies not only taste delicious but also serve as a center piece for special occasions. Most of my clients are referrals but also, word of mouth, recommendations and positive reviews from satisfied clients have further solidified my reputation with the industry.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients are Instagram and my website. I created my website 6 years ago. I created myself and I am constantly updating and changing pictures. I use an app where all the pictures I post on my Instagram goes directly to my website and that helps me a lot. Good pictures are always the best way to get new clients. It is very important to take your time and take a good picture with great light and background of your product so when the potential clients see it, they don’t scroll and they actually stop to appreciate your work.
