We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brianna Glover a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Brianna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.

My husband and I don’t currently have children, so our animals are our whole world. With three dogs and four cats, all rescues, we’re deeply committed to animal shelters and encouraging adoption. To provide some extra support, we donate 10% of the sales from our dog and cat-themed shirts to two local shelters we or our family have adopted from in the past. It’s our small way of assisting these shelters care for and help find homes for animals in our community.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I launched Bree Happy Designs in May of 2020 during the pandemic while I was at home full-time from my desk job. My interest in tie-dyeing began in high school when I learned the art with a friend, and it has always brought me joy to revisit over the years. I started with simple, classic designs and have grown to more complex designs and expanded color combinations.

By creating Bree Happy Designs during the uncertainties and challenges of the COVID era, our goal was to combine vibrancy, positivity, and a gentle reminder to be kind back into the world. We are always running a “Be Kind” themed t-shirt matched with the brightest colored dyes to serve as our reminder to spread kindness within our community.

I have always been fascinated by macramé knot work and hemp jewelry. So in 2022, I delved into creating our own hemp jewelry line to expand what Bree Happy Designs had to offer. It’s been a fulfilling journey crafting something fresh and unique by experimenting with different hemp colors, bead styles, and pendant types.

At Bree Happy Designs, our biggest source of pride lies in our commitment to size inclusivity. We believe in equality and do not impose varying prices based on different sizes. In addition to size inclusivity, we strive to minimize waste by repurposing any shirts with imperfections into Catnip Kickers. After being sewn into something new, they are filled with premium catnip and stuffing, offering our feline friends something vibrant to delight in just like their owners.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Never underestimate the impact of networking and social media sharing. My most effective method for gaining new and returning clients has been through satisfied customers who trust and refer Bree Happy Designs by sharing our posts, products, and tagging us in photos of our items in use. I’ve been absolutely blown away by the wonderful influence of positive word-of-mouth and referrals.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?

When I launched Bree Happy Designs in 2020, I was juggling a full-time data-entry job in an office. Most days, I would wrap up my day job at 5 pm only to dive into tie-dye and other small business maintenance until bedtime. Weekends were dedicated to showcasing my colorful creations at local farmer’s markets and other community events.

Several moments have elevated my business to its current success. Over the last 4 years, local businesses have entrusted me to infuse tie-dye flair into their employee uniforms, while I also undertook projects for nearby school systems. Expanding my reach, I ventured into events in other cities to broaden my audience. However, above all, the support of repeat customers and positive word-of-mouth referrals has played a significant role in driving my growth.

As Bree Happy Designs grew, it became increasingly time-consuming, leading me to a choice. I made the bold decision to trust my dreams and abilities, diving headfirst into full-time small business ownership. Since then, I’ve never looked back. Despite facing challenges along the way, I’ve never regretted the choice to work for myself.
