Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Casey Craig. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Casey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Yes, absolutely! While there are challenges to being self-employed that involve many tasks other than creating art, it is tremendously satisfying. I have always worked as an artist, but in the past, I had done so alongside full-time and part-time “regular” jobs. While there might be a bit more financial stability in having a regular job, it can wear you out and diminish your ability to create in your off hours. Since I am now self-employed as a full-time artist, I find I work harder for myself.

Casey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I obtained a BFA from the University of Texas, and started working as a freelance illustrator which I did for many years. This gave me great experience in establishing good work habits, communicating well with others, and improving my skills. I gradually migrated over to mixed media paintings that have a strong sense of design, pattern and simplicity that evolved from my graphic art background. I like to create stylized and colorful representations of the many animals that keep me inspired, many of which I can see here in the Texas hill country. In addition to original paintings, I also have a line of note cards, and several of my images are available as fine art prints on both paper and canvas. I am grateful to have partnered with several art galleries and I also enjoy working on commissions where I can create special custom pieces for my collectors. Painting is a joyful process for me and I want to share that joy with others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Simply put, shop local. There are so many wonderful, art galleries, shops, shows, and exhibits that offer a variety of artwork. The pieces available in these venues are unique and handcrafted. My hope is that people will seek out these places when they are shopping in person or online. I have found that art venues are incredibly welcoming, and very fun places to visit. Many artists also offer online options for direct sales. I truly hope people will seek out these local spaces in their own communities for a unique art filled experience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the reward is actually creating the artwork. I’m in love with the process of making art. From the sketch to the finished painting, it is truly a labor of love. The additional reward is when somebody responds and connects with one of my paintings enough to want to acquire it and enjoy it in their own home. I am immensely grateful for the art lovers and collectors that keep me busy creating in the studio.
