We were lucky to catch up with Sharon Polsky recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When opening a business, everything is a risk. I didn’t borrow any money to open my first fitness studio. Instead, I saved money and did it on a budget. I used up all the money I had saved, so taking the leap of faith to pursue my dreams was a major risk. Over the past 20 years, I have grown my business by trying to stay ahead of the fitness industry trends. Every new program I implemented was a risk. Some worked out and some didn’t, but at the end of the day, I was doing what I loved. It was worth it despite the financial risk.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sharon Polsky, a Weight Loss Expert who started working in fitness when I was 16 years old and taught my first Step Aerobics Class. I fell in love with fitness and knew I needed it to be part of my life. When I was young fitness was a hobby and not a career, so I went to college to pursue other career opportunities, but working in fitness was always part of my life. I ebbed in and out of the fitness industry throughout my adult life until I opened my first fitness studio 20-plus years ago. My goal has always been to make health and wellness accessible to those people that need it. What does that mean? That means it needs to be affordable and approachable no matter who you are and what your demographic is. Over the past 20-plus years, my approach and education have evolved, but my core values of affordable and approachable have remained the same.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think we can all agree that being able to pivot and survive the Covid pandemic required resilience to pivot and survive. However, it should not have required breaking quarantine restrictions and risking the health of our clients. During this time, my main priority was to keep my father, who was 88 years old at the time, and my clients healthy. As a result, I decided to pivot to virtual weight loss consulting for 15 months. This provided me with an opportunity to teach my clients how to eat healthily, cook healthy meals, and not resort to alcohol to cope with stress. It was a unique and amazing opportunity to encourage our clients to slow down and become mindful of their health, and most of my clients benefited from it. The good news is that despite being closed for 15 months, my business UNLEASHED came out stronger and better on the other side.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a business owner with over 20 years of experience, I have come to realize the importance of pivoting regularly, especially in the fitness industry. There are always new trends emerging, and technological advancements have completely transformed the industry over the past two decades. From the equipment we use to social media and marketing strategies, the technological landscape is constantly evolving. Therefore, it is crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and educate ourselves accordingly.
