We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jiayu(Jill) Zhang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jiayu(Jill), looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Grandma’s Recipe
This recipe is a link of emotions across three generations in our family. We seldom express love through words; instead, we pour our affection into cooking delicious meals for our loved ones. The ingredients can be used to make Auntie’s favorite buns, Mom’s cherished steamed dumplings, and my beloved beef-filled pastries. It also serves as a gift to my grandmother, in the hopes that it brings her warmth and shows our love for her in the twilight of her life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began my journey at Art Center College of Design in 2020, majoring in Illustration Design. During my undergraduate studies, I excelled in creating children’s picture books, editorial illustrations, and handcrafted items, all of which profoundly showcase my emotional connection to the world. My artwork aims not just to display beautiful images, but also to tell stories. I particularly enjoy replicating the texture and warmth of hand paintings in my digital illustrations. Currently, I work as a graphic designer at a gallery in San Gabriel. My primary responsibilities include designing layouts for the gallery’s magazines and exhibition newsletters, as well as creating promotional posters for new exhibitions. These tasks allow me to apply my visual art skills to practical marketing endeavors and help increase public awareness and interest in gallery events through social media platforms.
My creative inspiration comes from the joyful experiences of life, especially the precious moments spent with my family. I am keen to integrate these warm elements into my artworks, presenting a childlike style that reveals the innocence and optimism in my heart. I take great pride in touching people’s hearts through my illustrations and designs, and I hope my works inspire viewers’ imaginations and emotional connections.
For potential clients, followers, and fans interested in my work, I want them to experience the beauty of life and the power of art through my creations. Whether it’s through a children’s picture book or a vivid exhibition poster, I am committed to providing a high-quality visual experience, making each piece a bridge connecting viewers with the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Initially, I viewed artists as elusive and almost mythical figures, far removed from my everyday reality. However, once I ventured into the realm of art, I discovered that each artist brings a unique set of philosophies and visions to their work. We have the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore issues from diverse perspectives. The most fulfilling moments for me occur when my artistic concepts or techniques resonate with others, gaining their understanding and appreciation. These experiences not only validate my creative choices but also deepen my connection with the community.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Growing up in the era of Pixar films, “Ratatouille” has had a profound impact on me, particularly the lines, “You can’t change nature!” and “Change is nature.” These words resonate deeply, teaching me the value of resilience and adaptability. When faced with challenges, I’ve learned not to succumb to despair but to seek help from those around me, embracing change as a natural part of growth and development. This perspective has not only shaped my personal resilience but also influenced my approach to leadership and innovation in business.
