We were lucky to catch up with Jorden Kiddo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jorden, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Well, to get the technical skills like actually using DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), I started watching YouTube tutorials. I still do from time to time. It was there that I learned how to use the different functions within the softwares, that led to more creative decisions in my beats. As far as speeding up the process goes–with music or anything creative, I think that the more you create, the faster you learn. Those first few years were great and I was developing at my sound at a rapid pace! Learning how to use the software was the most important thing for me. After you learn that, it’s all up to your heart and brain to come up with something great. In learning more, the biggest obstacle was my own stubbornness! While it’s not too much of a big deal, even today, I haven’t taken the time to fully explore the possibilities of my preferred DAWs. I’m such a “I’ll figure it out along the way” kind of girl–maybe it’s because I’m always eager to get into the creative process!

Jorden, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Talking about myself is always interesting for me, so let’s see how I do this time. At my core, I’m a 24 year old homebody who enjoys making beats and playing video games. In addition to that, I am also currently pursuing my Bachelors of Science degree in Game Business and Esports at Full Sail University! I have a little over a year left in the program and due to my spectacular grades, I have been acknowledged by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Though I’m still trying to inch my way into the industry, I got into my craft by nurturing my interest in making beats–making music. I took a small spark and turned it into a passion-driven focus. I can make beats, give meaningful constructive feedback on your music, and on a good day I might even be able to help compose a marketing plan to put into action before/after the music is out. Apart from being a female in this space, another thing that sets me apart is that I take what I do personally. Everything I make or help to create has a piece of me with it. Music has the potential to become a time capsule for those that listen to it and it also could be the very thing to save someone’s life. I accept that responsibility, which is why I put so much of myself into my craft. At the end of the day, I want Artists to know that I’m with them through it all. I value communication and transparency and that allows me to build genuine relationships with people. I’m proud– honored, even, that Artists trust my ear when it comes to their art.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A couple of years ago, I was gaining some momentum. I had a great opportunity to do some first-time traveling and networking, visiting Detroit and LA–shoutout to Che. There was another trip planned but due to some unfortunate circumstances, it was cancelled. After that, I slowly started to realize that my dreams would have to take another backseat. My grandeur plan B of producing and directing my own films after I had made a name for myself in the music industry turned into one that was more realistic. I decided to go back to school, determined to finish this time around. I was able to sustain myself for a good while until that resource ran dry. Since January, I’ve been working part-time at an energy siphoning job, which is putting it lightly, and just trying to hang in there until I’m able to fully apply my passion towards music again.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Ultimately, I want to be able to take care of my family. Knowing they no longer have to worry about anything financially would give me a peace of mind. For myself personally, I’m driven by my aspirations to be something great. I believe my time will come, but until then I’ll continue to make the best music I can.
