We were lucky to catch up with Kinsey Wolf recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kinsey, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
I’d focus more. Natural entrepreneurs see opportunity everywhere. The best entrepreneurs learn how to say “no.”
If I were starting over, I’d focus more on fewer key offerings for clients. And I’d be bolder about marketing on just a few key channels.
Kinsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I studied Journalism and thought I’d be a reporter. The only problem? Reporting jobs were few and far between in 2013. So I landed on the dark side of content – marketing – and I haven’t looked back! Turns out that marketing is the perfect blend of creative and analytical, conscientious and competitive.
Since then, I’ve built my career as a marketer both in-house and as an external consultant. My specialty is building sustainable, scalable marketing programs from scratch. All of my strategies are built on the philosophy that if you take care of your customer, everything else takes care of itself. For me, the ideal customer is the North Star of any good marketing strategy.
Over the last decade, I’ve learned that marketing seems like it’s all about promotion, but really, it’s about aligning value. The best marketers are world-class listeners!
Today, I lead Polaris Growth Studio, and growth consultancy that specializes in marketing strategy, product marketing, and sales enablement.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
On public channels, like social media, consistency is the key. Showing up regularly is measurably more valuable than making a big splash once.
I’ve also been fortunate to be part of a handful of incredible entrepreneur communities (Freelance Founders, The Upside, Dreamers & Doers, and IndeCollective, to name a few!) I love being able to meet and learn from so many inspiring leaders. That’s really allowed me to build a community; it’s not about “reputation” in the classical sense, but more of a supportive peer network through ups and downs.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I originally set out to build a collective of marketing and sales experts for startups. (My former brand was The Lane Collective.) While I still believe in the concept of an agile, dream team-style approach to marketing strategy, I realized that many agencies already operate this way with subcontractors. And making that transparent didn’t feel like a value-add for clients; it just added complexity.
So, I decided to wind down the collective and instead focus on what I do best: growth marketing strategy for tech companies looking to build momentum and put themselves on the map. The result? More leads, happy customers, and a more fun business to build.
