We were lucky to catch up with Matthias Laudico recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matthias , appreciate you joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Ley Line Labs is a group of folks passionate about product, productivity & people. We’re really in it to make cool things & work with founders we believe in. Clients have mentioned we feel like a part of their team instead of just hired help, which we see as proof that we’re doing it right. We hear “rising tides lift all boats” a lot in our industry circles and, while it sounds a little cheesy, that’s really how we want to operate. Our priorities are what’s best for the brands, product, consumers, our collective partners and the CPG industry as a whole.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ley Line Labs is a Beverage, Snack & Supplement CPG Product Development collective that offers the flexibility of an agency with the full service capabilities of a larger firm. At our core we focus on efficiency and innovation while fostering small businesses (on both the brand and service provider side). We work to bring a product as close from idea to reality as possible; “From brain to buyer”, so to speak. We piece together the full CPG puzzle, starting with market analysis, branding, and formulation. Once Then when the product’s polished and data’s determined, we coordinate & communicate with manufacturing, compliance, distribution & media experts for a product launch targeted to the brand’s long term goals.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our commitment to innovation & holistic approach to product development is our differentiator. We utilize fresh market data and consumer insights along with the brand ethos & raw creativity when approaching a new product or line extension. The design, terminology, formulation, packaging formats – all of these elements need to work in partnership for a cohesive final product. We do our best to get all of the information set before the client makes any resource intensive decisions to mitigate errors rather than having to fix them retrospectively.

How’d you meet your business partner?
When we met, we were each independent contractors – Matthias in Market Analytics & Charlotte in Formulation. We were friends that had done work with each other. One day, the two of us and one of our distribution partners, Yuna, had coffee at Pop Up Grocer in NYC. We were chatting about struggles & inefficiencies we come across in our work that affected both us and our clients. Most of these issues were because the independent agencies were siloed from each other – the lack of communication between individual specialists throughout the product life cycle created a whole host of problems. This moment planted the seed for creating the collective model we operate at Ley Line Labs. As the product developers behind the curtain of some awesome & scrapy startups, we know just how tough it is to start and manage a CPG brand. We were sick of seeing folks with great ideas not make it through the tough times because of the lack of full service support for small businesses. So we decided to start the big firm for the little businesses.
