We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Ineson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always been interested in television and film. Growing up in Buffalo, New York the snows would pile 6 foot high and fall for more month of the year than not. I spent a lot of my time rewinding VHS tapes until they were worn down.
When I graduated high school, I became the first person in my family to go to college. Not knowing what I wanted to do for the rest of my life I was convinced to major in business as a flexible major that could serve me well in whatever avenue I wanted to make a living in. Eventually this would prove true but for a while I struggled in the business field post-graduation. I just found it wasn’t creative enough to be a fulfilling way to spend what felt like the vast majority of my time each day.
When the pandemic started in 2020, I was blessed with my health and gained a lot of perspective about life, who I am and who I want to be. I decided to peruse my lifelong passion of television and film by going back to school. I haven’t looked back since.
Tyler, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
While studying television and film at Buffalo State University, I began developing experience working on set of short and feature films, studio and field productions with local TV stations Fox 29, WGRZ, and WNED PBS.
I have had many internship opportunities in production and development. I have read scripts for American High, a production company in Syracuse, NY that makes 2 films a year for Hulu. I am currently interning with the Levinson/Fontana Company who currently has a show, Monsieur Spade on AMC starring Clive Owen.
I have written and directed my own projects and will continue to do so post graduation from Buffalo State University in May 2024. I am also open to working with studios and production companies in NYC, LA, or elsewhere!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are so many resources out there for inspiring creatives especially in the film industry. The first thing that comes to mind is the power of YouTube. As you go on and learn there always questions you may have and more often than not there’s a YouTube explainer video out there. This goes for tech, screenwriting tips, industry insights etc.
Social media is also a useful too. Building a brand, networking, and showing off your product or service you provide is all made easier with social media.
Job sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, Backstage, Hollylist, and others can help you get opportunities in the industry where you can meet likeminded creatives and get additional gigs.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There industry related books that have really helped me. That most of what I read now other than Star Wars novels. Two great ones, recommended to me by Chris Kuser of DreamWorks, are The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom Up and Hollywood Job-Hunters Survival Guide.
But my all-time favorite book that inspires me is more of a self-help/ lifestyle book; The 4 Hour Work Week. Its not a book about being lazy but how to orient your life and manage your time in a way that you get to live the way you want to live and have great experiences throughout your life and not just in retirement.
