We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carrie Hardaway. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carrie below.
Hi Carrie, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There is a unique privilege in owning your own design and art company – you get to experiment with all types of mediums. With each passing season of life, I find myself in a state of restless evolution, a sentiment I think is shared by many artists. That change is reflected in my work.
When I first began Friday Love Co I was absolutely obsessed with 9x12ft floral murals on cotton canvas. Then, I went through a digital phase where I fully immersed myself in pattern design, designing greeting cards, and giant floral prints. I got a few opportunities to paint murals in my community and dove into that head first. Right now, I’m in an oil pastel era and learning more about how to not smudge everything I draw.
Thing is, I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning or evolving. And that’s the beauty of it, right? Looking back on each phase of my journey, I see glimpses of my life woven into the strokes and lines. It’s like my art is a time capsule of who and where I was. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Carrie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Originally from the sunny vibes of Orlando, FL, I found my way to Louisville, Kentucky back in 2017. Throughout my life’s journey, flowers have been constant companions, influencing my designs and artwork.
In the past decade, I’ve delved deep into the art world, infusing ordinary spaces with creativity and beauty. Every piece I create reflects my profound connection to the community and my love for Louisville. From floral murals adorning neighborhood centers to collaborative projects with local businesses, I believe in the universal language of flowers and art, connecting us all.
While my artistic journey continuously evolves, my offerings range from greeting cards and prints to canvas commissions and floral designs. I also offer commissions of bouquet and house portraits which are a crowd favorite! My mission is clear: to spread flowers and inspiration across Louisville (and the rest of the world!). I’m actively engaged in advocating for the arts, collaborating with esteemed organizations like the Fund for the Arts, the Center for Neighborhoods, and the Speed Art Museum.
You can discover my art at local Louisville gems like Quills Coffee and online platforms such as Etsy. Follow me on Instagram for updates on my latest projects and available pieces. Let the beauty of flowers warm your heart and inspire you, echoing the sentiment, “What a desolate place would be a world without a flower!”
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My current project is centered around the idea of women still blooming no matter what stage of life they are in. Throughout my younger years, I was inundated with messages, even from other women, suggesting that once you pass your 20s, your vitality and relevance begin to fade away. I was told outright and subtly that I wasn’t going to ever be as beautiful as I was when I was “young”, I wasn’t going to be as spirited, vibrant, connected, or relevant.
As I just turned 30, I want to reject this notion of decline. Instead, I’m using my art to reclaim my narrative and celebrate the ongoing bloom of womanhood in every stage of life. I’m crafting a floral installation as a personal empowerment symbol, reminding myself and others that I am still thriving and evolving in this new decade. It’s a declaration that I am not only allowed, but encouraged to remain relevant, contribute meaningfully, and continue creating.
Choosing daisies, my birth month flower, as the centerpiece of these pieces is a deliberate nod to my journey. They’ve been a constant companion throughout my life, serving as a reminder that age is no barrier to owning one’s story and embracing every moment with strength and grace. My aim is to challenge the prevailing narrative imposed on women and inspire a shift towards celebrating the beauty and resilience found in every stage of life.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

The most impactful way to support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem is by uplifting their voices and actively engaging with and purchasing their work. In today’s digital age, where design software and AI technologies are prevalent, and copyright issues abound, it’s crucial to recognize the significance of directly supporting real artists.
One of the most tangible ways to do this is by purchasing art from artists whenever possible. Whether it’s a painting, sculpture, print, or any other form of artistic expression, buying directly from artists not only provides them with financial support but also validates their craft and dedication. Every purchase is a vote of confidence in their talent and contributes to their ability to continue creating.
Beyond financial support, showing appreciation for artists’ work through comments, sharing their pieces with friends, and engaging with their content on social media platforms can make a world of difference. Building a community that celebrates and uplifts small artists, connecting them with new audiences and opportunities, is essential for fostering a vibrant creative ecosystem.
By actively advocating for and investing in artists, we not only support individual creators but also contribute to the richness and diversity of our cultural landscape. Let’s champion the real artists, amplify their voices, and ensure that their contributions are valued and recognized in society.
