We were lucky to catch up with Greg Hanna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Greg thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started building model cars as a kid. In all scales ranging from 1:24 to 1:12 scale. The problem is space. Ten years ago I discovered people making custom Hot Wheels. And that was the perfect blend of modeling and space needed.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been into model building, so this was quite a natural transition. People might be interested in knowing I have a BA in music theory/performance. I have toured the world playing and recording with DH Peligro, The Dickies, and Pete Anderson. Making custom Hot Wheels definitely scratches that creative itch.
There are a ton of people that make custom Hot Wheels. Some people approach it as a 1:64 scale model, which is awesome! My vibe is to make it look like a premium Hot Wheels release that you could find on the shelf.
I only build what I want I find interesting to build. That ranges anywhere from ‘32 Ford hot rods to modern era JDM cars. Since these little cars are made of metal, they can be chopped and sculpted just like the real thing. But my main passion lies in custom paint work. Making them sparkle and shine.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal was to make what I want to make the best way I can. Run it up the flag pole and see who salutes. People can get on board or pass. Either way I’ll still be making custom Hot Wheels.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Seek out artists/creatives whose work speaks to you. Support what they do.
If you are an artist/creative, help others. There are no secrets. There is plenty to eat at the table, so give a hand up.
