We recently connected with Matthew Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matthew thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
16 selling beats in high school off MySpace and from barbershop kids at school
Matthew, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
i got in into the music business early, i was playin the drums from like 7-11 years old at my church. My mom always bought me keyboards and stuff. I played saxophone 6-12 grade with the same band director. Band was where i learned the pyramid of sound, how to read music, and just all the music theory and knowledge to compose a song. During high school in was introduced to fruityloops by a friend and i would make beats everyday and bring the beats to school on a mp3 player or cd. Id let everyone hear my beats at school. Me and a couple friends started a label in high school and we signed our first artist Chedda Redda. we produced and album called Arrogant and we burned alot of cds and sold them at school. So i stared producing 2006 til now almsot 20 years its a long story. i graduated 2007 instantly i went to full sail university August 2007 and finished august 2008. Once i came back to vegas i was hoping to work at the palms studio but they wanted me to be an intern so i got all muy own studio equipment and started running sessions at my house, which then led to me workin at other people studios until i eventually got my own which currently is in las vegas Hit World Studios.
Thhe most thing im proud of is my gold plaque i recieved for being involved with a record called “Dont Rate Me” feat Quavo off NBA Youngboys album “The Last Slimetto” The album sold over 500,000 copies and my billboards top 10 peaking at the number 2 spot behind Bad Bunny. Ive worked with other rappers that did big numbers on youtube. I have millions of streams through my catalog over 30 million. Ive produced for Mozzy, Sauce Walka, Lil Boosie, Jim Jones, Jack boy, Sada Baby, Icewear Vezzo, and so many more it would be too many names to go thru.
What makes me on another level then other producers is that i rap and sing also. Im a one stop shop literally. Get a beat made, then i can record and if you need a feature i can get you right as well. Ive been doin this for song long, so i have seen and heard almost every trick when it comes or being creative and relevant. What also seperates me is that i dont have a job. I strictly do music. So if i dont record or make beats i dont eat. I live this music life for real. Everything i have is because of music.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
i built my audience on participating in beat battle in and out of vegas. I go live everyday while im either making beats or recording. Also performing my own music helped me becuase when people was working with me or if i feel like that i just drop and album and promote my music or my beats and it makes people want to work with me as well. I didnt alot of open misc alot of free shows.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
a story that illutrates my resilience…i started when i was 15 im 35 i been doin music 20 years. I killed myself 2014 and im still here still making hits
