We were lucky to catch up with Natalie Letona recently and have shared our conversation below.
Natalie, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
You have to be willing to go through the ups and downs of whatever it is you’re trying to succeed in. It’s not always going to be a straight line, and the solution will not always be clear. You have to learn to work for it. It’s okay to make mistakes along the way, and to change up your strategy, Once you figure out what works best, you will see everything start to align.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While looking for a career path I first landed on psychology. The mind has always intrigued me and how different every person uses theirs. How people react to emotion, stimuli, environment, etc. it all has a different perspective for each individual. After realizing that science and math were not my desired cup of tea, I looked for a career in something else and landed with a Bachelors in Advertising.
This career path has been a two in one for me. I am still able to use psychology in my work by analyzing my audiences. How they will react to something that my team and I have created. Because of my background in both psychology and advertising, I have learned to portray that in my photography and creative work.
When it comes to my photography, I don’t only do it for my clients, but for my self as well. I want my audience/clients to feel happy with the content I have given them. I want to create an emotion with the photo they are looking at. I want them to see the beauty, emotion, and soulfulness that I have captured. Just like any piece of art, everyone has a different emotion, and that’s what I try to put out with my photography.
I’m proud of my journey with photography and I am always improving myself. I love having clients that have creative ideas, even more-so when those clients are family and friends. All my clients help me break through with new creative inspiration, as simple as some of it may be.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
At first I used social media “just because”. There was no strategy at first to my social media presence, but then when I started to take my photography seriously, I researched. I researched everything from: what time to post and what days were best, creating a unique hashtag, following pages that were similar to my photos or those that inspired me, following local pages, testing my captions, using hashtags relevant to the photo I posted and more. It’s a lot of work and you have to keep up with it to really work to your benefit.
I also used the Ad tools within Instagram and Google Ads, these two were a big help for insight on analytics. Since I have a background in Marketing/Advertising, I understand why analytics is a big part of growing your audience. I understand not everyone knows this and it would benefit to use a team to do this for you (if it’s in your budget to do so). But I do encourage to get familiar with the analytic tools on Instagram and Facebook to see where your audiences are coming from and how they are landing on your page. That’s the great part about these tools; once you set your profile as a business profile you have access to these tools.
Overall, have patience. You won’t see a change over night, or even in a couple months, Just keep working at it and change your strategy as much as you need to, and keep in mind, social trends always change, so to keep up, you have to change with it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
I love the feeling I get when I’m right in the midst of the project and seeing it all come to life. Something that started as a vision is now in solid form. Getting lost in that process and seeing he final outcome is always so rewarding.
