We were lucky to catch up with Alessia Secli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alessia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
As an artist, some days can be tougher than others, our field is full of uncertainties and on our bad days it’s easy to wonder if a regular job would make our life easier. I found myself in this situation before, but I always remind myself that I was not made for any other job in the world.
This is the only job that will make me feel on top of the world.
There is nothing like being on stage and feeling like a kid again. That feeling makes up for any hardship the job comes with.
I would never trade that with anything.
Alessia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Alessia Secli and I am an Italian Singer, Actress, Dancer and Choreographer based in New York. I was born and raised in a beautiful small town of the South of Italy and since I can remember I always wanted to be on stage and share my passion with the rest of the world.
My parents never fail to remind me of when, as a kid, I was “directing” and “choreographing “ entire shows with my friends and “performing” them in our garden for the whole neighborhood to see.
Growing up my dream kept getting bigger and bigger until, once graduate in high school, I decided to move across the country and started my professional training in the performing arts!
I got my degree from MTS Musical the School in Milan and ALCM diploma in Music Theater Singing at London college of Music from University of West London.
In 2019, looking for the next big step of my career, I moved to the big Apple!
New York has always been my dream, so when I had the chance I jumped on the first flight, excited for a new big adventure!
In New York I attended Peridance Center, a renowned dance conservatory that helped me explore and refine my movement research and technique, and HBStudio, the prestigious acting studio, where I could further debelop my singing voice skills and character research.
During these last 5 years in New York I had the opportunity to be part of various incredible theatre productions such as the LATAA award winning show “5 Paths to Uptown Stories”, “The Balcony”, “The Full Monty”, “Working -A Musical”, “Pippin”, “Xanadu”, “Neverland Never Ends”, “The Taming of Kate” and many more!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission as a creative is to create an inclusive environment to work in! As a creative and a performer myself, one thing that is very important to me is that every artist working with me find a inclusive and welcoming environment no matter their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, body size, height, disability, or immigration status.
For too long Performing arts were restricted to specific categories of people and I hope I can be one of the creatives of this generation that could help break this pattern.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Go to see live theatre and then talk about it! It might sound basic but the best way to support emerging artists in my opinion is to go see their performances and then share with the people around you what you saw and how that made you feel! Theatre is a two way street: the artist needs the audience as much as the audience needs the artist, and all together we can bring more and more people back into the theaters!
