We were lucky to catch up with Robert “bobby.t” Tyndale recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robert “bobby.t”, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission through Record in Colour is to help creators of colour grow an engaged audience using video. This initiative stems from my observations over a decade in the creator’s economy, noting a significant rise in content creators who have turned their passions into multimillion-dollar enterprises. Despite these successes, there remains a substantial underrepresentation of creators who look like me.
Motivated to join the expanding creator’s economy, I founded Record in Colour. My goal is not merely to participate in the industry but to revolutionize it by providing creators of colour with knowledge and solutions tailored to their needs. This mission is significant as it equips these creators with the tools and support needed to succeed independently and excel in the digital content creation space.
By addressing unique challenges—such as those arising from having darker skin tones in visual content—I aim to deliver effective solutions and empower creators to operate within an independent system. Record in colour is more than just a business; it’s a transformative movement dedicated to enabling creators of colour to carve out successful pathways in the digital content creation landscape.
Robert “bobby.t”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My early experiences at 17 as part of Evil Geniuses (Team EG), a top-tier professional eSports team, profoundly shaped my career trajectory. Representing Canada in numerous international eSports tournaments, I was at the heart of an emerging industry where players competed at elite levels and built significant personal brands. This dynamic environment was where I first saw the powerful intersection of personal branding and strategic partnerships, as players teamed up with larger entities to launch tailored products and services. This firsthand glimpse into the burgeoning field of eSports ignited my passion for entrepreneurship, leading me to venture beyond gaming into business.
This transition from eSports competitor to entrepreneur began with opening a clothing store, where I quickly discovered a love for storytelling through imagery, video, and photography. My journey in content creation matured with the founding of Version Me Media. This production company specializes in culturally resonant storytelling through video and photography. At Version Me Media, we go beyond merely capturing images; we delve into the personal and cultural narratives that shape our clients’ identities, crafting visually stunning and emotionally powerful stories. This dedication to impactful storytelling sets us apart in the competitive landscape of content creation.
Building on this solid foundation, I expanded my reach through my YouTube channel, just bobby.t, and my podcast, The Cadence of just bobby.t. These platforms have become avenues for connecting with hundreds of people, where I share insights and solutions particularly beneficial for creators of colour navigating the creative economy. These interactions, which often highlight common challenges and innovative solutions within this vibrant sector, are some of the work I’m most proud of. They enhance the digital landscape and promote a more inclusive and diverse creative community.
In today’s digital age, where high-quality, impactful content can be produced more cost-effectively than ever, my mission is to empower more creators, particularly those of colour, to tell their stories and achieve independent success. My latest initiative, Record in Colour, specifically aims to help creators of colour grow an engaged audience using video. Through Record in Colour, we provide creators with the necessary tools and knowledge to carve out their unique space in the digital world.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, know that my work is dedicated to elevating voices and narratives that resonate deeply and stand the test of time. Whether through Version Me Media, my online platforms, or Record in Colour, the essence of my work remains rooted in meaningful storytelling and the empowerment of communities often left on the margins of the digital conversation. Through these efforts, I strive to ensure that every creator has the opportunity to share their story and make a lasting impact.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The most significant resource I wish I had tapped into earlier is the power of community. During my early days, especially transitioning from my gaming career into broader entrepreneurial ventures, I underestimated how vital a supportive community could be. It’s not just about having a mentor; it’s about engaging with a community of like-minded individuals at various stages of their journey—those ahead of you and those a few steps behind. Such interactions allow for exchanging ideas, challenges, solutions, and successes that significantly enrich one’s learning and growth. This collective sharing within a community helps to solidify one’s understanding and can accelerate personal and professional development exponentially. A robust community provides a network of support that can often be the difference between stagnation and significant advancement.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
My view on NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) is highly positive, especially considering their potential impact on creators. NFTs represent a monumental shift towards actual ownership and control over one’s intellectual property. For creators, this technology offers an unprecedented opportunity to monetize their work directly and on their terms through the blockchain. The ability to track, manage, and engage with one’s work transparently changes how creators interact with their audiences and manage the economics of their projects. Moreover, as Web3 and blockchain technology become more integrated into our digital experiences, they will likely become essential tools for creators seeking independence and control over their creative outputs. The emergence of NFTs and blockchain as mainstream elements offers exciting opportunities for empowerment and innovation within the creator economy. For anyone in the creative fields, especially those part of Record in Colour, embracing these technologies could be crucial in shaping a sustainable, independent, and thriving digital presence.
