We recently connected with Anastasiia Gertsen and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Anastasiia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
In preventive medicine as well is in Ayurveda it is very important to pay attention to small details which people normally don’t really care about, or think that it’s aging, or normal.
Like having a daily stool before breakfast, or checking on tongue plaque, checking your eyes color, if they are shiny or not, is there any dryness on the skin, or bloating, heaviness after food, energy levels before and after meal.
All of this is very important to evaluate your own condition. I teach my clients how to understand their body signs and how to act accordingly.
When you learn to understand your body, and pay attention to those details, it’s so much easier to feel much better, because you understand what each sign means, and what you need to give to your body to help it to heal.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, everyone! My name is Anastasiia, I’m a nutritionist. Ayurveda specialist and speaker from Ukraine.
What I do is my absolute passion – helping people to feel better and healthier and I feel so happy and excited when I see the results of our work with clients. And I’ve been interested in this field since I was a teenager.
I’m specializing mostly on treatments of different kinds of problems like digestive problems, weight management, hormonal imbalances, low energy levels, migraines, etc.
I’m constantly studying also so I can incorporate new knowledge, new practices like those in Panchakarma (an Ayurvedic therapy that involves that helps in cleansing the body of accumulated toxins with an aim to restore health).
Many people think that Ayurveda is some kind of pseudoscience, or don’t know what it is at all. But after finishing the school for classic nutrition and preventive medicine, and getting into Ayurveda, I can definitely say that it is so incredible that modern medical research is discovering things that have already been described in Ayurveda thousands of years ago.
Ayurveda allows me to see deeper, and wider the cause-effect relationships. Its dosha concept also helps to understand modern science, biochemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology on a different level, while fundamental medical knowledge help to correctly interpret and apply all the instructions given by Ayurveda.
This amazing combination helps me to understand better the roots of each body’s disbalances, and treat it accordingly, as bodies may have the same diagnosis and symptoms while the cause is different.
My patients often find me when they’ve gone through many doctors, specialists and didn’t have any improvements in their condition, or very minor, and they’ve lost hope that their body can be fixed.
In our modern medical system there is no time to treat some minor imbalances, the system is built in the way that you can get assistance only if you have a serious condition. But as long as you are more or less fine, most probably you won’t get any help. And I was one of those patients looking for help to fix the symptoms which were bothering me, going from one cabinet to another with no results.
It was exactly the time when I realized if I don’t take my health in my own hands, I would probably feel worse and worse, and no one would help.
Apart from having my private practice I really love spreading the knowledge about healthy lifestyle, getting people to know about Ayurveda and its potential, important knowledge on how to understand your body and its symptoms. That’s why I’m participating as a speaker in different events like yoga retreats, online courses, festivals.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learnt that even the best professors, even best teachers that I’ve met can also make mistakes, because they are also humans. I was relying on their opinion so much, but then your own practice is what makes knowledge much stronger, and sometimes your practice is not the same and differs from what you learn from the books, or hear from the best professionals. Everyone’s experience is different, therefore everyone has different conclusions.
This understanding helped me to be more confident in building my own cause and effect relationship while I’m analyzing each of my patients, but also taking into consideration other specialists experience.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Definitely not! someone said if you love what you do- you won’t have to work a single day! For me learning something new from medical field or having a new case to resolve is like meditation, I don’t have to force myself to do more research, or study, I’m really enjoying it, and I’m amazed and excited every time by discovering abilities of our bodies.
