Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adam Leroy Lawrence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I was freshly out of high-school, I procured a job working for my father at an Advertising Agency. I was an entry Production Artist. My goal was to gain some experience here then move onto art school to which I would study Graphic Design. My father guaranteed me an Art Director position at the agency upon graduation. My course was set. While in school, I discovered the computer animation program. Even though I studied Graphic Design, I was quickly drawn to the art of animation, so much so that I sat in on classes and worked on animation projects during off-time. Despite having worked in Graphic Design and having a guaranteed job secured for me upon graduation, I followed my gut and decided to switch majors. It was uncharted territory and quite the risk. Fortunately, my father understood my decision, knowing that working in his field would no longer be my course. Due to the niche and nebulous nature of my new career set, finding a job after graduation was fickle. I didn’t have the guaranteed Advertising job to launch my career, instead I was finding myself doing web-work, freelance jobs, and whatever else I could muster to make money freshly out of school. Initially I felt as if I made a mistake with my career choice. Eventually I found a job as an animator for a trade-show company and began to find my groove. I befriended my new co-workers and together we would leave the company to start our own. Just when I found my comfort zone at the trade-show company, I took a risk and I left the job behind to start a new journey into uncharted waters, yet again. The new company was a success and looking back on it, it gave me the building blocks to become a more skilled, refined and durable person later on in my career. Taking the road less travelled is sometimes risky, difficult and uncertain. However win or lose, you will gain something invaluable and unexpected in return. Something that cannot be gained without risk.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Adam Leroy Lawrence and I consider myself an animator by trade. The title “Animator” is an umbrella term that I use to describe the many sub-skillsets and roles that I tend to fill on any given project. Because I am an “artist-for-hire” I would also consider myself an “entrepreneur” due to the nature of the career. First and foremost I have a small digital agency we call Motion Co. which is composed of my partner and I, plus our small talent pool of cast on rotation for various projects. Due to ebbs and flow of our industry and also our low-overhead, I also freelance for other digital agencies and animation shops of the like. Most recently, my company Motioin Co. has undertaken a multi-year advertising campaign with consists of fully animated TV / Social media content for the Regional Flood Control District here in Clark County. Ranging from ground up creative, including creative concepting, character development, music and sound creation, animation and storytelling, this is a project I am proud of and serves as a foundational showcase for what our agency is capable of.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
My view of anything blockchain technology is mostly favorable. Here at Motion Co. we have brought on a few clients for NFT campaigns and enjoyed the process. I believe it’s still a highly mis-understood technology as the media and general public has mostly written it off as just another tulip frenzy. I beg to differ. Some of the recent trends that took place, mostly in digital collectables, seems to be the first draft in what this technology can bring to the table in regards to the digital ledger application. For example; If you were to purchase something of high numismatic or intrinsic value such as a high valued piece of art, land, or digital assets (such as virtual goods for games), these items can be recorded as an “NFT” on the blockchain making you the official digital owner despite not having said tangible item in your direct possession. This goes beyond digital art and into the real-world of collectable assets.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Turning an idea into something consumable. Everyone has ideas, yet it’s the execution of those ideas that fuels my drive as a creative. I have always taken great satisfaction in the end result, however for me, it’s the road that leads to that result that garners the most value in my line of work. I really love the process.
