We were lucky to catch up with Maxi Adelstein recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maxi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Gratitude Garden Co. prides itself on the makeup of being a Women and queer based landscaping company in a field of majority male businesses. GGC is also an ethical based company that prioritized a more livable pay, nature care and care for people and the land.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started Gratitude Garden co. after dropping out of college. I began offering small yard maintenance services to neighbors of my parents. I had a bicycle and a handful of tools and set out at a small rate to work in folk’s yards. Over time I was able to buy a truck and begin hiring a small crew. Through the years the company has evolved to being just Womyn and queer individuals who love gardening and nature. We work symbiotically as a team to do projects such as native plantings, yard maintenance and more. Our clients consist of a large portion of older women who love gardening and don’t have the energy or ability to keep up with their space on their own. We love that we can fill a need for our clients while doing what we love as well.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
GGC has always been a “word of mouth” business. Patience, honesty and quality work has gotten us to having clients spread the word about what we do and why we do it.
We also began talking to folks at farmers markets and spreading the word face to face. I’ve found a lot of people just want the opportunity to talk about plants and really care about their yard environments.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We regularly are in communication with clients. Whether it’s an initial consultation in person or a follow up or check in email, we aim to stay connected with our clients. Occasionally we offer seasonal newsletters and filtering as well.
