Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leah Clay-Downing. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Leah, appreciate you joining us today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
The best investment I’ve made as a business owner is purchasing an 85mm lens. Before making the purchase, I had been in photography for 6 years and primarily used my kit lens for photoshoots. My kit lens is 18-55mm and it operated smoothly, but I wanted to elevate my specialization in portrait and lifestyle photography so I research various lens types. I fell in love with the way an 85mm lens captured subjects by providing drama through the bokeh effect and assisting in capturing emotional expression. Since purchasing this lens, I have been able to provide my clients with remarkable images that preserve their beautiful memories.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started photography at 17 years old as a hobby that afforded me an emotional release and an avenue for creative expression. I enjoyed capturing beautiful scenery and authentic moments from my family which allowed me to hone my craft. I explored various specializations and through that, I learned how to capture stories that were emotionally resonant. After years of practice, I decided to offer my services to a wide audience including professionals, entrepreneurs, and business owners with the mission to provide an unforgettable experience. Whether my clients are in need of portrait, lifestyle, or environmental photos, I intend to capture the essence of every moment and ensure memories are beautifully preserved.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Utilizing my network, building a rapport with new clients through consultations, and client testimonials have helped me expand within this market. Most of my clients have been people I’ve connected with over the years whether in school or places of employment. After their photoshoots, I often make it a point to send follow-up emails expressing my appreciation and to seek testimonials. Nurturing that connection will bring repeat clients and also breed recommendations for new clients.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy is being willing to talk to people. Word of mouth in St. Louis travels fast and it has been beneficial for my business to have conversations with strangers at grocery stores, the doctor’s office or at a restaurant. I’ve been able to establish good connections to later produce potential leads.
