We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rell Godly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Taking a risk in the entertainment industry is always needed. Something different about entertainment is you have people as your sole consumers rather than products to sale. You have to inspire, motivate, and always stay welcoming. One risk I had to take was actually beginning my passion to put the community before myself. I get we only have one life and time travels fast, but I had to make a big leap into thinking of how I wanted my life to end up when it is all said and done and that required me to drop my personal passions and chase a unity led vision. I faced many times of doubt, loneliness, rejection, and more, but remembering my why and diving into what truly makes me happy always reminded me to keep doing it for the people who wants and needs what I feel I have to offer. I dropped my music career and went head first into the professional choreographer, dancer, and creative director route and instantly started creating visions and projects for people. This feeling was the best feeling in the world of course. After a couple years of bouncing around making everyone else happy I realized I was becoming at a stand still to my overall life goal. Is it the location? Is it the people? Is it the market? It is what I’m doing? Who knows, but to keep my happiness present I decided to now add and balance my artist life along with my business journey and learning new ways to combine and contrast the two. Its really two different brains to juggle, so for me trying to figure out how to keep myself happy and balanced is a day to day risk. Joining a wrong environment, location, or event can alter so much of my foundation and representation, but everyday I thank above for guiding me in making what I believe are now perfect decisions.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I feel a huge lesson to unlearn with a business hat is to treat others how you want to be treated. I say that because it can lead you into a route of over investing into other peoples interests and failing at your own. Instead I choose to meet people where they meet me. That way you can a broader understanding on how the relationship is going to go rather than how you wish it will go with full sacrifice to your discernment.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I will definitely say my work ethic and genuine energy. Every one who meets me and comes to me with good intentions and open arms has an experience they can remember in a positive light. Even people who may come to me to judge, scrutinize, laugh, shame, or change … Most times they leave my aura applauding, thanking, or commending me for being just a genuine hard worker with no ill intentions for anyone. That alone is shown and felt in my spirit. That can take people a long way.
