We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful MUSZETTE. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MUSZETTE below.
MUSZETTE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I have thought about having a “normal” job many times. Of course this is always when I feel like I’m not getting the results I want fast enough, which makes me doubt myself – will I ever get there? And this makes me fearful of my future stability. A quiet voice has always whispered when I’m quiet enough to listen, “so say you quit and did something else and played it safe, could you actually leave it forever or would you want to come back to music eventually?” And the answer is ALWAYS yes. Music is in my heart and soul. It breathes through me like oxygen and so I continue to come back to my craft, especially when it’s hard, because that’s when the best source of inspiration can happen.
I’ve also thought about what it means for me that I only want a “normal job” when I’m afraid? Absolutely nothing in life is guaranteed. Success across the board takes hard work, so I might as well be the one creating the challenges I face rather than letting them be created for me because I was too scared to choose it for my myself.
This mindset gives me a sense of control that reminds me I am the master of my own destiny. Yes it sucks that when I have a bad day, if I’m slacking things don’t move as quickly, but it also means that when I’m on fire things really move fast. I like being accountable for my energy in this way.
Lastly, I’ve realized the importance of asking for help. A big dream means asking for big support. (Plus it’s a lot more fun!)
MUSZETTE, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started singing even before I could speak. I think this career chose me rather than me choosing it. I grew up with a single working mother and so even though I was an only child my Mom was busy to support me and I craved connection and attention. I started doing an after school theater program and will never forget what I felt like to sing for the first time in front of people. It felt like I was communicating on a level that created that intangible connection I was craving. I think what sets me apart are my live shows. That to me is why I’m doing this and I work extremely hard at making that a memorable experience. I love to translate a feeling to my audience, and let them take that feeling with them. Again I live for the connection!
Any advice for managing a team?
I think when you’re managing a team, two of the biggest things I’ve learned both from leading and from following, are appreciation and enthusiasm. It’s amazing how much better of a performance you will get out of people when they feel genuinely acknowledged for their contribution. And additionally, enthusiasm is contagious. Obviously when you’re managing a team a lot of emotions and factors can come up to manage, which might distract you from the most important task you have as a leader, to lead by example. I’ve seen from experience that my energy has a direct correlation to the energy of my team. The passion and dedication they see from me (or lack there of) is what they will mimic. Everyone wants to be apart of something great, and it’s my job to believe in that vision of greatness first.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve had to be resilient almost every day in my career, but an especially difficult time I can remember was when my guitarist for my first tour quit unexpectedly 2 weeks beforehand, and I had to scramble to find a replacement. I learned some super important lessons from this — the first is the power of staying committed. At no point was cancelling my tour an option, and it’s amazing the kind of solutions you’re willing to find when you’re committed. The second was realizing that it could actually be better with this other solution. The replacement we found had a small storage trailer we could tow to our van and load all of our equipment in, which was a solution to a problem I didn’t even realize I was going to have with him! Someone wise once told me, you’ll only fail if you quit. So don’t quit!
