We were lucky to catch up with Brensha Searcy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brensha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Starting out in the permanent makeup field was not easy for me. I remember taking my first 2 day microblading class, not realizing that this was not nearly enough time to gain a good foundation in this career. Most consumers do not realize that cosmetic tattooing/PMU education is unregulated in Ohio and many states across the U.S. Most consumers believe that PMU artists go through rigorous training programs and apprenticeships to prove competency. However, this is far from the truth. My time spent as a beginner artist with no continued support or apprenticeship was challenging. I was self taught, studied and practiced a lot. The more I grew my knowledge in this business, the more I continued to witness the lack of adequate training programs in Ohio which led me to where my business has grown today. I saw how the state was not regulating training requirements or ensuring that self proclaimed trainers were qualified or preparing new artists entering this field. Currently, in Ohio and many other states, PMU education is not regulated. This means that anyone that has obtained a tattoo license for their location can give a “certificate of training” to a new person.
Be Browed Etcetera Academy is now the 1st & only registered permanent makeup school in Ohio authorized by the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges & Schools to offer certificate level training programs for aspiring new artists.
I am excited about this unique approach to PMU training and am committed to providing students with an appropriate education that supports the development of new PMU technicians entering the industry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The permanent makeup services that I offer are powder ombré brows, lip blush, lip neutralization, scar & stretch-mark camouflage & eyeliner. For PMU training, I teach brows and lip blushing/lip neutralization. My brow trainings are normally completed within 4-8 weeks. I also provide an apprenticeship component for all training programs to help my students develop their new skills in a supportive environment where they are able to receive feedback and help on client cases.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I initially got into PMU as a side hustle. At the time, I had been thinking of ways to bring in more income to supplement my corporate job. One day while on Instagram, I kept seeing posts about microblading eyebrows. I did a bit more research and found out that there were no requirements to getting started in this business – all I needed to do was take a 2 day class from an artist that had already obtained a tattoo license and then apply for my own tattoo license to work legally. I took the leap and invested my tax refund on my first microblading course. In the beginning I rented a bed and started with about 2 clients a week. Shortly after, my part time side-hustle was generating more income than my full time job. At that point, I knew it was time to expand and invest more time and energy into my business. I took my first PMU class in 2019, went full time in 2020 and have been doing PMU since! With hard work and consistency, I generated my very first 6 figures my 1st full time year as a PMU artist during the 2020 pandemic doing permanent eyebrows only. It’s been up and up since!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that offering what others aren’t doing in the educational sector has contributed to my reputation within the market. I’ve always went above and beyond to offer new students entering the field of permanent cosmetics the highest quality training programs and continued mentorship programs. My permanent makeup training programs are the first and only programs to be approved and recognized by the State of Ohio education board and nationally by the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM). After experiencing first-hand as a new permanent makeup artist the lack of support and hands on training opportunities, I knew that something had to change and have made it my passion to keep raising the bar in PMU education.
