We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crimson Sairina. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with her below.
Hi Crimson Sairina, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’m very happy being a creative person. I’ve had several regular jobs throughout my life, and in fact, I’m in one right now. However, they’ve never felt as fulfilling and gratifying as composing, crafting, or singing does. I can lose myself in my creations and spend all day on them. It’s truly something else in all the best ways.

Crimson Sairina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began experimenting with composition even before meeting my harp teacher, though I had no clear direction at the time. Interestingly, it was through a Twitch livestream that a friend recommended this teacher to me. We bonded over our shared love for fantasy and metal, and I’ve learned a great deal from her. While her music inspires me, mine tends to lean more towards folk music. My entry into metal was through another friend I met online, who recommended me for my first vocal recording on their song. Since then, we’ve become close friends, and their death metal style continues to inspire me.
I would describe my music as symphonic folk metal. I enjoy blending ethereal harp melodies with robust strings, heavy guitar riffs, and dynamic drums. Incorporating the Hardanger fiddle allows me to infuse cultural elements from my home country into my music. I also create pieces that could fit into movie and game soundtracks. When composing for others, I explore different genres and cultures to capture the essence of a character or theme, prioritizing the song’s narrative over sticking to a specific genre. However, I always find ways to incorporate the harp, a personal favorite instrument.
One project I’m particularly proud of is a work-in-progress piece that falls within my aforementioned sub-genre. It combines my passion for music with my love for the Elder Scrolls games, resulting in a unique and immersive experience. I’m dedicated to perfecting my songs, going the extra mile to ensure they shine. Among my posted songs, “Tamsyn’s Theme” stands out as a favorite. It pushed me to explore new instruments and delve deeper into folk music beyond Norway, resulting in an experimental yet satisfying creation. Ultimately, the happiness of the friend for whom I composed it is what matters most to me.
Aside from original compositions, I enjoy creating remixes and covers as a way to reimagine and interpret great songs, letting my imagination and ear guide the process. There’s always something to learn from studying and appreciating the work of other composers.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The struggle to find meaning in pursuing endeavors that don’t promise substantial financial gain is a common dilemma, especially in a world where capitalism often dictates our choices. Many are deeply entrenched in the belief that financial success is the ultimate goal, making it challenging to comprehend why someone would dedicate themselves to an endeavor that may not lead to wealth.
I understand this perspective. Money is undeniably crucial for supporting oneself and achieving personal goals. However, there’s a profound difference between merely surviving and finding true fulfillment. It’s a delicate balance, particularly for artists and creatives who often face financial instability while pursuing their passions.
Despite the challenges, there are still opportunities for creatives to thrive, provided they can navigate the evolving landscape, including the potential impact of AI on various industries. Some find success by commercializing their art, while others prefer to maintain their artistic integrity and autonomy.
For those who choose the latter path, the motivation often lies in the intrinsic rewards of creation. The act of bringing something new and meaningful into existence, whether through music, art, or other forms of expression, is inherently fulfilling. While financial stability is essential for survival, it doesn’t always equate to personal satisfaction or joy.
As someone who aspires to make creativity a full-time pursuit, I can attest to the fact that the joy derived from artistic expression transcends monetary gain. The fulfillment I experience after completing a creative project surpasses any material wealth. While it may not lead to riches in the traditional sense, the profound sense of purpose and satisfaction derived from creating is priceless and fuels my passion regardless of financial outcomes.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting artists directly through platforms like Patreon, Ko-fi, and Bandcamp is incredibly valuable and meaningful. AI may offer convenience, but it lacks the personal touch and unique essence that human-created art possesses. When an artist puts their passion, commitment, and personal experiences into their work, it becomes something truly special and irreplaceable.
Moreover, considering the significant impact art has on our lives, supporting artists financially can be a worthwhile investment. Initiatives like artist funds can provide much-needed support and encouragement to creatives, allowing them to continue producing meaningful and impactful work.
Collaborating with local artists and creatives not only enriches your community but also fosters a deeper connection to the art and culture around you. Some of the most cherished creations often stem from collaborations and personal connections, capturing a wide range of emotions and perspectives.
Art has the power to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and inspire new ways of thinking. It encourages us to explore different viewpoints and adds richness to our lives. Whether it’s through critical reflection or pure enjoyment, art plays a vital role in shaping our experiences and broadening our horizons.
