We were lucky to catch up with Lindsay Mack recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My first daughter (Jaylyn) was born in November of 2014. I knew I wanted to capture the moments of her life in better quality than an iPhone. So, I taught myself how to shoot on a DSLR. I watched videos and took online courses while I was up at night with her. I loved learning about the mechanics behind good photography. Then, we adopted my son, Asher. I knew I wanted to capture those moments, too. I bought lenses. Cameras. Equipment. We flew to Armenia to adopt our son and I was so thankful for this new found skill as it allowed me to capture those moments. Now I can relive those days, and feel again those emotions. I started shooting other families, and got so much joy from shooting them. When Asher first was brought home, he had been diagnosed with Leukemia. This was devastating for us all. I continued to use my new found skill to capture all of the moments we had with Asher. I didn’t know what the future would bring so I wanted to ensure we froze time and captured each minute with him. He is now 12 and doing well!
During treatment (chemo), Asher was given so much from so many wonderful people. And to give back– I offered sessions to these people and then to OTHER families with kids going through cancer treatments. It became a gift that I could give others.
As time went on, I randomly got a message to shoot a wedding for someone I didn’t know. It was shocking and I thought–can I do this? But they decided to take a chance on me. After that first wedding, I fell in LOVE with capturing weddings. I loved every moment, I loved capturing and freezing time for my couples. My passion for wedding photography grew and grew.
In 2020, I lost my Mom after a battle with ALS. This completely flipped my world…and the way I viewed wedding days for my couples. It truly showed me the importance of photos. This may the last time they see a relative, or a friend. It made it all the more important to me to capture those moments with the mother of bride or the grandma on the dance floor. I became extremely intentional in what I was shooting and who!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Virginia Wedding Photographer. I am passionate about capturing the moments on a wedding day as they unfold. It’s so important to have the moments of your wedding day captured as they happen – so you can relive them for a lifetime. I have a lot of personal history with loss and the impact of that has made it vitally important of who and what I capture on your wedding day- I truly believe this sets me apart. I have a heart for people. I want the best for everyone I meet. I do my best to portray this in my business practices. My clients are incredibly important to me, therefore so are there families and the moments that they have on their wedding days.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I turned my family photography business into a full blown wedding photography (and now videography) business. It was truly by chance that the first wedding client I had took a chance on me. My husband now shoots videography alongside me and we work as a team for video/photo. I think a kew milestone was when I went public as wedding photographer and no longer advertised any sort of family session. I still do family sessions for long standing clients or wedding clients. However, they are not very often.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Following up on that first wedding client I had, I have now shot his sisters wedding and about to shoot his other sisters wedding this August! I have shot their family portraits and milestones in my life. I truly feel like a part of the family when I’m with them. I try to keep in touch with all of my clients on social media. I send and receive Christmas cards from many of my clients. I text and get coffee with some! Once your my client, your my friend for life it seems. I really love people. I love to know their stories and get to know them, I love to share in their lives and their milestones as they grow families etc.
