We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Muhaymin Luckett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Muhaymin below.
Muhaymin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
As an Actor, growing up I was always inspired by Will Smith’s work. I remember always waiting for the “Fresh prince of Bel-Air” to come on. I even went so far as binge watching entire seasons because he was so entertaining. As a actor and a Creative, Will Smith was one of the people I looked up to. From then, I knew I wanted to be an actor, so I decided to study acting, and I started from its roots, Theatre. I went to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and got my BFA in Professional Theatre.
As a Writer and Filmmaker, I decided to take it more seriously after I had written my first work during the freshman year in college. For me, it went from playwrighting and then later dabbling into screenwriting. After I directed my first play and I saw how it went, from then on I just wanted people to see my work. I knew this was something I wanted to do. So I brainstormed of ways I can do it and on a bigger scale and that’s when I thought about just filming it. After I filmed my first project “Shady Business “I went on to create an entertainment business company called “One Vision” and started writing, producing, and directing my own work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, my name is Muhaymin Luckett, and I am an Actor, Writer and filmmaker. Since College in 2016, I’ve been in multiple plays on stage. What got me into acting was watching my role model Will Smith growing up. Acting is something I found myself enjoying. I love the process of familiarizing yourself with the roles you take on and living out the life of the character. I started my film company out of my desire to bring my stories to life. I am most proud of the journey I’ve been going through as a solo filmmaker who does everything from behind the scenes including directing, sound, lighting and writing. It is challenging to take on so many hats and lead and direct everything, making sure everything goes well. I take pride in the progression that ONE VISION has been through. One of the main things I want people to take away from my work is that every project that comes out of One Vision is organic. All ideas, cast , scripts, and locations is funded by me. Even as a low budget filmmaker, I still found a way to create. I didnt make excuses, I just did it.
I got to where was today because all I simply wanted to do was tell my story the way I wanted to be told and do it my way. From a playwright to a screenwriter, I found that through filmmaking, it was possible to share my art to the world in a more affordable way. Now my stories are being seen by 200k + people and more.
My journey wasn’t easy but it also wasn’t impossible. It did take a lot of trail and error, going and learning from YouTube university and taking a dream and making it happen. In everything you got to start small. “Don’t wait, Create” was definitely a motto that drove me to creating from using a $100 camera to investing in $3000 worth of equipment to see my vision come to reality. Throughout my journey, I learned that your first couple attempts are going to be bad. My first script was bad, my first film was bad, the sound doesn’t sound right etc. I learned that in the process, not only will your product become better, but also your visions will grow larger as you see what you truly can do.
My brand and Entertainment Company, ONE VISION is going to tell a story have how every idea you have starts in your head, and how it takes patience and hard work to for you to see your vision come to life.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, The most awarding aspect of being a creative is making sure that your ideas just don’t stay ideas. To plant your seeds and actually watch them grow, to produce work and have people see them. There is no greater joy then having a standing ovation after working your butt off in your auditions and going through weeks of rehearsal to have people see the play. To hear people laugh during a comedic scene, to see people cry after going through a wave of emotions during a dramatic intense scene. To have that final bow after the play is over. Thats the fruits of your labor. What every actor wants day after day from each performance. It means so much.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Starting out, before even getting accepted into college, I always thought acting was easy. I thought all acting was reading lines on a page to your scene partner. My understanding of acting was so surface level and it showed when I took my first acting class.
I didn’t give acting the respect it deserved. I had to unlearn this really quickly if I wanted to be the actor I set my sights on being. I didn’t understand all the research, character work (Motivations, Intentions, Background, emotional) it took to be a great actor and it showed in my acting. Alot of people think they can just be actor. Sure you can, but are you going to be a memorable actor/actress? Are people going to be able to feel you? Are you going to be able to take more than just the surface level of your character role? Are you going to be great?
