We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keyuna Milam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keyuna below.
Keyuna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Growing up my mother was always on a diet or exercising to lose weight. There would be all sorts of exercise equipment and videos in the house. She was very strict and wouldn’t let me hang out very much, so I was home most times. I also went to the exercise classes with her. I enjoyed exercising. It was fun to me. I looked at the people on these videos, mostly white women, not thinking much of it at the time. I loved Tea Bo with Billy Blanks and actually got to workout and meet him numerous times when he visited the base in Germany that we were stationed. Fast forward to going into the fitness & wellness industry myself I want to be one of the household names & faces associated with fitness and good health worldwide. Mainly because in the black community there aren’t a lot of images that mirror our own to look up to. Our community suffers greatly from preventable diseases like hypertension & diabetes. These things can be avoided by healthier lifestyle choices. I hope that people will say that I was always encouraging them to make healthy choices and find balance in their lives. I would like for them to talk about the energetic, positive approach to fitness & wellness that I shared. I want people to remember how I helped them along their weight loss, fitness or wellness journey(s) and pass along the knowledge that they gained with others.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Wanna Go Fit LLC began as On the Go Fitness. I created a business that combined my love of fitness and the autonomy to be available for my children while serving as a military spouse. I love fitness. Always had. I would help friends and family all the time. This is what I was good at. I got certified as a Personal Trainer and began to teach group fitness classes. That was in 2007. After returning to school and gaining more experience in 2015 I re-branded to Wanna Go Fit LLC and added more services like CPR and the rest is history! My goal is to do more educating on healthy living and aging.
What I feel sets Wanna Go Fit apart is the personable service that’s received. You get more than just a personal trainer; you get someone that cares about the whole person. Not every solution works for everyone. Our clients’ plans are tailored to their needs and ailments if necessary. Because we are based in the military community, we work with a lot of military personnel to maintain/ meet the physical standards that are required for each branch. We also work with a lot of retired military members who have ailments/ conditions post their military career. For our clients who have children in the home educating them on building healthy habits that they’re children can grow into healthy active adults. We work on a goal-based system. By evaluating every 30 days and setting monthly goals this is our way to help our clients attain the healthiest versions of themselves. This not only includes their physical fitness but, mental and emotional as well.
In January 2023, I began the Wanna Go Fit Wellness series. These events offer education by way of panel discussions on subjects like: General Health, Mental Health and Fitness & Nutrition. We also provide free resources. This series was spearheaded after the death of a friend who basically worked himself to death. I want to educate the community on what being “healthy” really looks like. We offer the opportunity to be able to ask qualified professionals questions/ resources that you may google and never find the answer you are looking for. The goal is to share the knowledge of wellness as a whole. We gained media coverage in the form of television and newspapers. There is great support for these events. See the pictures under the “Events” tab on our website. (www.WannaGoFit.com) We welcome community support to provide these free resources to the community.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being an entrepreneur is an emotional roller coaster. I began On the Go Fitness as a job…Wanna Go Fit LLC is a business. One of the biggest struggles that I have had has been staying consistent when life has “lifed”. Being a military spouse, I moved frequently. That meant rebuilding my business each time that I moved. I had to market, network and build my business in different states 3 times before rebranding as Wanna Go Fit LLC in 2015. And then had to do the same thing two more times up until 2017! In 2020 I separated and divorced. My spouse had been the breadwinner. I then had to support myself with my business during the covid pandemic. It was a trying transition. However, I am still here and have had numerous successes since then and I am not stopping there!

Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
We offer our logoed branded merchandise as well as some other supplemental wellness products. We are an Advocare retailer which offers weight loss and nutrition supplements. We also are a Mineralgia retailer’ which is a Hemp pain relief cream. We also offer CPR certifications via the American Red Cross.
