Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bree Cosby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Bree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’ve never been the type to want or need anything extravagant, always been somewhat of a minimalist. I do not have the desire to attain fame or have my name in lights; my only desire is that generations from now, my children and their children will know that I was here, that I did my best, and I spread my light wherever I treaded. When I started Sunflowers & Honeycombs, it wasn’t for profit, it still isn’t. I started my business because it came to me in a dream one night, and I knew my creations would inspire and bring love and light to whomever I encountered. Nothing warms my heart more, than to see pictures of people wearing my creations or sending me messages of how I’ve made them feel…feelings…that’s the legacy I want to leave behind. Whenever my name is spoken, I want people to remember how I made them FEEL. I want people to remember me for the good that i’ve done, I want people to light white candles in my memory once I depart from this lifetime, I want to be a story told by elders to the babies. My legacy will stop once the last person speaks my name, so until then, I am committed to being my authentic, free-spirited self, and I know that will suffice.
Bree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In all transparency, I never thought I would own a business. I’ve always been an artist, always been a creative, but I never fathomed that I would one day then my art into something tangible that I would share with the world.
The idea for my first pair of earrings came to me in a dream, and the next morning while it was still fresh on my brain, I immediately gathered whatever materials I had available to craft together my prototype, the rest was history.
I initially started off making pairs of earrings made from flowers, but as time went by, I started branching off and making earrings/necklaces with different materials, and also incorporating my spirituality into my craft by adding crystals, spiritual cleansing items, and homemade natural skin care products.
What I am most proud of is the fact that my creations are global. I never would’ve imagined that my creations would be in Africa and the Middle & Far East. When I received my first international order, I cried for hours. It’s such a beautiful feeling to know that something my hands and my heart created are making other hands and hearts happy across the globe.
What I want potential clients to know is that you matter, and you’re worth it. You are beautiful, no matter your shape, size, or shade. My creations are for every person, from every walk of life; and when you are in my hands, you will be treated with love, kindness, respect, and tenderness.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A very big lesson I had to learn quickly is that art is subjective; what is beautiful to me, may not be to someone else. The first and only time I’ve gotten a bad review, broke me down and almost made me quit. I had to really sit back and look at all of the great reviews I had gotten, and put them side by side with this ONE bad review, and make a choice that I wouldn’t let it define me or my art. I took what was said and allowed it to be a critiquing moment and used it as fuel to my fire.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is word-of-mouth and being a waking mannequin. I’ve gotten 97% of my clients by wearing my creations in public or my clients posting pictures on their social media platforms. Social media has played a major part in my successes; because of social media shares, my business was featured in Buzzfeed! I truly am grateful for my clients and them loving my creations so much that they tell their friends about them and take so many great pictures in them. I’ve been made bulk orders for photoshoots and bridal parties! I have so much gratitude.
