We were lucky to catch up with Ian Asbury recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ian , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Teach my ass to be humble! This world is very large, a lot of people doing a lot of cool stuff. Don’t think you’re too cool, do as much as you can to be the most helpful to as many people as people. Be a leader. I was throwing parties and involved with nightclubs early on and did it because I was good at it, I never did it to be cool. My parents told me to be a thermostat, not a thermometer. Set the tone, don’t let the tone set you :)
Ian , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Good Clean Fun is in the business of building cool spots where people can come together to enjoy each others company through the medium of Food, Wine (beverages) and Music. We want to provide hang out spots that likes quality, specialty items without all of the fuss. I was inspired when I went to Paris for 8 days and I never had a meal and then bounced after 2hrs. I would eat and drink and laugh and hang out as long as I could or until we wanted to go to another spot. I also went to Blue Hill @ Stone Barns and was there for like 9hrs!!! We closed it down. I am not a traditional diner and I didn’t want to create a traditional spot – a third place where you meet with your friends or you meet new people. And wine definitely helps that :)
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a business owner, you are faced with ultimate volatility. The highs, the lows but you have to always come up with the answers and make sure that your business continues forward to be able to pay the livelihoods of your employees, your distributors, your farmers, governement via taxes, man it goes on and on! Even though we are small right now, there are a lot of people that count on us! Its wild! And then hopefully at the end that comes back around to you. You have to be so strong. We should have closed multiple times. But I would always challenge myself, what if we couldn’t, what would I do. And you get more creative and you figure it out. If you have a tough stomach, then you can maybe do it :)
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
HELL YAH. Food and Drink and Music is the best. I would never change the area of profession. Now maybe theres other things I would have done differently but it is what it is! So lets learn and keep moving forward and do what we can.
