We were lucky to catch up with Nikki Reyes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
While there are many different psychics, mediums, healers, and readers out in the world, everyone has their own gift and approach. For me, it’s all about creating a safe and interactive experience so the client does not feel intimidated. I’m not here to “tell you want to here”; I’m here to “tell you what you need to know”, and about 99.9% of the time, clients leave looking relieved and thankful. I don’t just “read the cards”, either; I read your energy, channel the spirits, and deliver the messages about your current trajectory. After all, my motto is “Messages Through Divination, One Reading At A Time”.
Nikki, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
It all began back in 2018 when I volunteered for the Learning Light Foundation’s Reader Studio in Anaheim, California. While I was only doing oracle readings, I took it upon myself to delve deeper into tarot itself, starting with the theory and basics. One of the first ways I learned to read the cards was following various YouTube channels, but after awhile, I started to notice their bias and also some were even gatekeeping the practice in ways that they shouldn’t have.
After taking classes in 2019 and the early part of 2020, things took a turn with the introduction of the “Safer At Home” orders, but this didn’t stop me from continuing my mission. Through the sea of misinformation to conspiracies being spread like wildfire, I started to notice a lot of spiritual influencers adopt such things without hesitation. This prompted me as a psychic to demonstrate that tarot is a tool for divination, and someone had to be the voice of reason in a world gone mad.
Fast forwarding through 2021 to 2023, I maintained my YouTube channel (which is currently on hold but I have plans to revitalize it) until I moved from Rancho Cucamonga back to LA via Alhambra. Through the health scares and diagnosis of my current disability, I still remained determined to continue. In January 2023, I took a leap of faith and applied to be a part of the Lunam Love Mystic Market in February that same year. Being my first offline event and my first appearance at a pop up, I didn’t know what to expect. However, had I not taken that chance, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am now.
Lunam Love Mystic Market opened the door to expanding my business and taking on new ventures, even if I was scared to do it in the beginning. From that point on, I returned more than once and started to vend at other events such as the May Day Faire at The Old World Village Huntington Beach, Magic Market Pop Up at Heritage Square Museum Los Angeles, The Witches Brew Night Market in Downtown Santa Ana, Summer Spook Nights in Rancho Cucamonga, Big Dream Market in Monrovia, and the Little Sedona Expo Psychic and Healing Arts Fair events throughout Southern California. Through these opportunities, I was able to not only become better at my craft, but I was able to truly reach different audiences to demonstrate that tarot is a tool to connect with the divine.
Tarot often gets labelled as taboo, and I’ve had my share of harassment from the public. However, it doesn’t stop me from demonstrating to the collective on why my services are different. As I previously mentioned, I don’t just “read the cards”; I help you dive deep into the realms of the unknown and unseen. I show you that without darkness, there’s no light. I teach people to become that light they wish to see, because in the darkness, they are the ones who light their own way through the shadows. My goal as a business owner is to help people understand that they have more power than they realize, but they must be willing to reclaim it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started, I had no idea how I would make it at all. While I do work full time at the moment, this business is part time but yet a full time job. I have done events where I may make two to three times the amount I paid and some events I barely make one sale or two if I’m lucky. I’ve seen vendors pack up and leave a few hours earlier than the event end time, but I don’t give up easily. If I made an investment, I will see it through and even if I don’t do as well as I want, I know leaving early is not only hurting potential customers, but it also hurts my image to the organizer. It is better to ride the storm out than quit before the end. Part of doing business is learning to take the good with the bad, and the bad with the good. Balance is the key and identifying the areas of improvement will help you make better choices in the end.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
A lot of my audience came from networking online and offline. I’ve used hashtags, followed other accounts, interacted with other creators, and of course, consistently posted. I’ve seen a lot of people post without using social media’s toolkit just because someone had success with a “no hashtag” strategy. Social media marketing is not a one size fits all solution! The best way to build your following is to not just post consistently, but also make it a habit to respond to your followers. Ask questions, create polls, and have fun! Just like I mentioned before, you’re going to have good days and bad, but you can’t allow a low performing post to make you feel you’ve failed. I’ve done the test of a faceless reel and a reel showing my face, and guess what? Showing my face has gotten more engagement as people are happy to connect with my energy and not some faceless creator. Learn how to use QR codes and offer incentives to your audience as well because they will help you build that following. Don’t be afraid to get out there and talk to people either!
