We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Madi Taber a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Madi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
One of the biggest unexpected issues we run into is lack of recycled materials. We often run out of the wood we need to continue building. Our products are made out of fully recycled products, including the sinks and hardware.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our names are Madi and Alison and we are the co-owners of Mama’s Mud Kitchens. We met in March of 2023 and quickly bonded over our love of childcare and motherhood. We noticed a need for outdoor play and nature exploration. We explored many ideas to introduce a hands on play that allowed children to be just that, children. We came across the concept of mud kitchens, an outdoor play kitchen made of recycled materials that promotes imagination while encouraging fine and gross motor skills. We decided to name our kitchens, as we cherished each kitchen we built. After building our prototype and building kitchens for families and daycares, we decided to expand on our vision and created our imaginative play kits. We utilized the products natures provides and created products like our mud basics kit and potion kits. From there we expanded to outdoor approved play toys. Over time, we created nature tracks, puzzle blocks, and even expanded on our play equipment. We recently built Tilly the teepee and our first of our Haven Homes collections, Harriet. Our favorite part of our business is meeting families and those in our community that assist in finding repurposed materials. We have even interacted with customers from Iowa and Wisconsin. Meeting those who are also passionate about nature and outdoor play has warmed our hearts. We can’t wait to see where the future takes Mama’s Mud Kitchens.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Starting our business on social media helped us grow our business rather quickly. Our most beneficial factors were having a strong support system behind us and our giveaways that promoted sharing and liking specific social media posts on our profile.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our mission is to encourage families to play outdoors and explore the nature around us.
