We were lucky to catch up with Camryn Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Camryn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I believe having a family business is about having a legacy to pass down to further generations of yours while also empowering, teaching, and inspiring your employees. Here at this is it we pride ourselves on great hospitality and excellent service and honestly, we could not provide that without creating an environment built on family and togetherness for our staff. To me this hits home because i come from a family who owns their own business as well.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Camryn Wilson, I’m 23 and I moved to Houston from Baton Rouge Louisiana about 4 years ago. I started This Is It as what I thought would be just a summer job, but I quickly fell in love with it. When I started my position was just bussing tables, but I soon realized that I wanted more out of the job. I began taking on different task and proving myself worthy of a higher position, and after a year of hard work and dedication I became a first-generation manager. Sadly, I got my promotion during covid, so business was slower than what I was used to, but it gave us the perfect opportunity to utilize social media and grow business back into what we once were. Along with utilizing the power of social media we’ve also implemented some other strategies such as weekday specials to help the community get great quality food at an affordable price. With 61 years behind us I’m most proud of the legacy and longevity of our restaurant and none of it would be possible without the beautiful people of Houston and surrounding areas that depend on us to provide great food and even better service.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media for us became a great tool to generate customers during the pandemic. It gave us a platform to advertise our restaurant in a many different ways. If I were to give someone advise I would say to just stay consistent and don’t put too much thought into your content because remember, social media is meant to be fun!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe 61 years of excellent food and even better service helped build our reputation in the community.
