We were lucky to catch up with Marine Galstyan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marine, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am happy as a full time Makeup Artist. Being a Makeup Artist lets you create art for yourself and no one else.
Being your own boss, you will not have to answer to anyone else about what you create – Artists get to enjoy a great deal of freedom. You are your own manager, and you alone determine what you will create.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Makeup Artist at IATSE Local 706. I am a TV & Film makeup artist based in Los Angeles, California. I was born in Yerevan, Armenia. My family moved to the U.S. in 2005, where I worked a variety of different jobs from restaurants to real estate. I quickly realized that my real passion was in makeup. As a child, I would go into my mother’s makeup drawer and create beauty from my own imagination. This was very rewarding, and I found my true calling in artistic endeavors. Being a makeup artist allows me the freedom to play and create at the same time. I specialize in Film & TV Makeup. I produce natural looks for events, glamorous looks for fashion or entertainment, and highly specific special effects looks for film and television.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Knowing that you were responsible for making someone else happy is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding feelings you can experience. Your art can truly make someone’s day and quite possibly more than that even.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Choose the Right Social Media Platforms. It’s not practical to be everywhere. Keep the lines of communication open with your audience, but you also don’t want to overshare so much that you look desperate. The sweet spot is posting around 3-4 times a week.
