We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vin Sharma a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful projects are the ones that reveal our intimate relationships, as well as how we relate to the people around us.
‘Coalescence’ is a series of visual diptychs arranged as a dialogue between myself and my daughter. Compositions that place us side by side, as we navigate a world of change. This intimate project aims to express the experiences of women during the transitional phases of menopause and menstruation – it is a call to appreciate our shared journeys and elevate these natural processes.
Project that combine My daughter pivots on the cusp of adolescence, while I am nearing the end of this cycle. 40 years divide us. As the tenderness of childhood slips away, we bracket each other’s natural rhythms. In between, rests a delicate balance of our demands and desires.
The cycle of life’s balance persists.
The youthful desires that once held my attention make way for the gift of time, while my daughter’s zest for life unravels as a charged birth of emotion.
We seek to tread gently through these rites of passage, as a tender coalescence binds us. We weave our stories together with a gentle acceptance of age.
Through these diptychs, we encourage you, whoever you are, regardless of age, to honour your personal journeys and celebrate change as a catalyst for acceptance and love.

Vin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For nearly two decades, Brooklyn has been the cherished backdrop of Vin Sharma’s visual history. With its ever-changing tapestry of culture, an echo of her own upbringing, New York City has challenged Vin to document our intimate relationships, to seek new perspectives, and to capture the fleeting essence of life’s most cherished moments.
Through her lens, Vin honors our familial ties – through intimate projects that demonstrate our connectivity. Traveling remains a consistent thread throughout her visual work.
A daughter of immigrants from India, raised in Canada, Vin’s work engages the viewer through a language of shared experiences.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal is simple – to keep exploring, to keep digging deeper and to continue the learning process. Photography is a multi faceted practice and inherently, on a personal level, seeks to reveal. My mission has always been about integrating the emotional impact of continual learning
As life moves on, so does photography in its role as a witness to the human experience.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
There is nothing quite like standing in front of a carefully presented photograph or being able to hold it in your hands. Being able to touch the paper, to perhaps catch the scent of the darkroom, to see the image with your own eyes. Engaging our senses through the physicality and emotional impact of photography is essential in how I see my practice.
NFTs are not physical objects a viewer can perceive holistically.
Photography has always been about the physical world for me – not only in its depiction but also in its ability to include and combine other art practices. NFTs do not allow this. Although they work for many artists, they do not hold any interest for me.
