Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maggie Pool. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maggie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
From day one, my parents have always encouraged me to do what feels right for myself. I was always told, “Ask the questions! If you don’t you’ll never know the answers.”, and boy did that stick. Though it was always talked about in the context of education, I took it quite literally. From then on, I’d deem myself as a curious kid that grew into an even more curious adult as my world grew bigger with me. As my curiosities expanded, my interests followed. My parents have never once gotten in the way of any dream of mine, but instead encouraged them. They knew that a little human in a big world had so much to explore; and that’s what I did. Cameras had always been an interest of mine, but when I got my first digital camera, it made me question everything. ‘How does this thing really work?”, or ‘what happens if I play with the exposure like this?’. Asking all the right questions has launched me forward to where I am today, and I have my parents to thank for that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being an artist is not an overnight ordeal my any means. It’s a lot of free work, even after dropping $1,000+ on new equipment that will only hopefully launch your business forward. It’s word of mouth and meeting up with strangers in random places, but knowing it’ll grow your portfolio. My biggest advice for anyone in this industry or as an artist is to make friends everywhere you go. Once you do that, your worth starts showing in your work as word of your business spreads.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding parts of being a photographer and my own boss are knowing that I can wake up and create whatever the hell I want, even if it seems crazy to some people. I love being able to choose the clients that I work with so I can make my visions come alive while watching people have fun in front of the camera and creating an unforgettable experience.
