Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Khushi Jamnadas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Khushi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started doing photography in my freshman year of high school back when I lived in the suburbs near Toronto, Canada. My walk to school was 20 minutes – it started with a stroll outside of my neighbourhood, then on a downwards trail that oversaw a lake, then finally a series of neighborhoods arranged like a maze that I had to navigate through. Despite this becoming a routine that I lived through for 10 months a year, for four years, it never got boring to me. In fact, I got the privilege of overseeing the most gorgeous sunrises and colours reflected in the lake. I started capturing pictures on my phone to remember these moments. I noticed that each sunrise looked very different, despite the common setting, so I decided to experiment with different aspects of the image, such as the angle, lighting, hues, etc. I used applications such as Photoshop Express and Lightroom Express on my iPad to learn the basics.
Seeing what I know now, I would have sped up my learning process by going out of my way to see new places. Instead of taking photos in the same location, I think that traveling more, even to local places nearby such as downtown, malls, farmers markets, etc., would have taught me how to take photos in different locations, as different settings require unique styles. This also exposed me to different lifestyles, especially when I moved from Toronto to Tampa, which is why I saw a change in my style of photography as well. The most essential skills were likely being able to catch the perfect lighting, and angle. What helped speed up this process a little bit was volunteering to take photos of my friends, as this allowed me to experiment with what angles worked for certain poses, similar to how different settings require certain angles. While it seems easy, the viewpoint from which one takes a shot is dynamic, and has the power to completely change the way a picture is perceived by the audience. With that being said, my biggest challenge in photography would probably be finding new sites to explore to take pictures in, especially because I cannot travel often due to school. I try to optimize the number of unique I can get by trying to change the times at which I take photos, as well as the angles, in order to make the photos look more unique and differentiated.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As of right now, I am a content creator. I primarily take photos for leisure using my iPhone and in the process of learning how to use an digital camera to take digital/vintage looking photos. I think the greatest accomplishment with my platform was being recognized and reposted on the feed of one of Canada’s largest resorts, Deerhurst Resort, in Muskoka, Ontario, for a stargazing picture I took while I visited. What differentiates me from a lot of other content creators is the fact that I am still able to produce high quality images despite not having very advanced equipment. I am looking to eventually expand this account into a side-business where I can take on clients to produce content for portfolios or other major events. I am located in Tampa at the moment but hope to move to a large city in the northeast or California where I will get the opportunity to do street photography in downtown.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, in my opinion, is seeing how far I have come, and the progress that I have made, specifically with skill level and technique. When I first started, most of my posts were of sunsets near my neighbourhood or by the lake in front of my home. Because I was just taking pictures of sunsets, I was not gaining enough exposure as to how to take pictures in different settings. When I started travelling around the city more and going on mini vacations, I was able to take pictures in different environments, such as cities, museums, local shops, towns, beaches, and more. Since then, I was become much more creative in my execution of photos and the quality of my photo editing has improved drastically.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
A goal that is driving my creative venture with my photography platform is my dream and desire to travel. I hope that I can live abroad at some point in my life, ideally in my 20s or early 30s, probably in Europe, where I can do travel blogging. I hope that by starting my account early, I can start building a brand and gaining traction from a young age, as well as building connections. This way, I can pursue street photography or daily vlogging of tourist destinations in daily lifestyle in the specific country. I am a strong believer in the fact that photography allows you to see a situation from multiple perspectives, similar to how travelling exposes one to a variety of different lifestyles and culture. Through this, I hope that I am able to maintain an open mindset about life.
