We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josefina Rita Marcolin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Josefina Rita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was little, I think that since I was 8 years old, I liked everything related to art. My father was a doctor and painted pictures as a hobby, and my mother drew realism perfectly. I was always a person with a lot of energy, I attended many extracurricular activities; English, gymnastics, dance, and one of them was drawing and painting.
Regarding the world of tattooing, I was struck by the television program “INK MASTER” and another one that I don’t remember the name. It caused me so much intrigue that, for my 15th birthday, I asked for a tattoo as a gift; my mother almost killed me lol.
I finished school and graduated as a Criminalist, but I didn’t practice it; I started working on something else. And for the year 2018, a friend wanted to start tattooing, and well, I lent him my arm, he made me two FreeHand snakes… they looked pretty good.
Since I saw that it wasn’t complicated, I told myself. Well, let’s try it… until yes, I realized it wasn’t easy at all, but I didn’t give up and I kept practicing. A year later, they told me about a study called “TATTOO TIME” by my friends Facundo Gil and Belén Fernández. I learned and I continue to learn from them; I always owe them gratitude, and I am more than proud of them. I adore them.
Today I keep learning day by day, and I hope this lasts forever because I don’t see myself doing anything other than this beautiful profession.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Josefina Rita Marcolin, and I am 27 years old. I’m an Argentine tattoo artist specializing in fineline and blackwork. I started in the world of tattooing as a hobby, as I was intrigued by this world since childhood.
My sister Ornella saw potential in me and created an Instagram for me; she called it “INK.RITA”.
I don’t know if there is something that differentiates me from other tattoo artists; I artistically admire each of them… I know very few personally. I would like to meet more artists.
If there is one thing that always stands out to me, it is the human quality and the treatment of people. I like that there is a round trip with the person who is going to tattoo with me since they place all their trust in you. It is a moment of great vulnerability where they leave their body in someone’s hands, where they will leave a mark for life.
I am proud of the personal and professional growth I have made in 3 years and I want it to continue to grow.
I would like people who come to get tattooed with me to get carried away… enjoy the process.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
At the moment when I am tattooing or designing, it is a moment where time does not pass and my head is so immersed in what I am doing, that I stop paying attention to what is happening around me. I am a very anxious and thinking person. When I am in that moment of creativity, everything becomes peace and tranquility.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think it is about continuing to grow personally and professionally. I would like to reach places and people that have a high artistic level and, above all, learn from them. Sometimes the ups and downs prevent one from moving forward… but we should not let them come into play and simply make friends or learn from them.
