We were lucky to catch up with Jae Esquire recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jae , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I love this question because the more I grow my business, the more I”m realizing… just DO it! In 2017, I was teaching Computer Technology at Imagine Great Western Academy in Columbus, Oh, the kids were testing and it left me with a few free periods. I’d just started djing the year prior but business was booming and I needed a home for my brand Jae Esquire. I’d already released a few projects and people were starting to ask, “well who are you with? How can I book you?” I looked up ‘ PR Classes” on YouTube and found a group of lectures that taught the subject. In less than a day, I decided to form 3e Multimedia LLC.. it would be a digital assets company and also dub as a home platform for Jae Esquire. For the next two weeks, with watching that class everyday, taking notes and slowly building my website, 3E Multimedia was born. I didn’t know what/how I would get to all the other arms of the business started, I did know that djing could give me the income and leverage to bring the other parts to life. I wasn’t hasty about being at the “top” of my section of industry because I know the long game is the winning game. I still have times where I’m kind of stuck in, “omg is it good enough? Am I doing this right” .. I just continue to do my absolute best and learn along the way.
Jae , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m like the ‘project’ and also the ‘machine’ behind the project lol. I use my presenting brand, ‘Jae Esquire’ as one of my company’s first and biggest clients. Jae Esquire is a radio personality, educator (pre and post-secondary education), and budding musician ready to make a break! 3E Multimedia is a digital assets and consulting company aimed at empowering business owners to advocate for themselves in advertising situations or with free lancers. We also provide digital assets like audio commercials, video production and preparation, copy writing, graphics and photography. One thing that sets us apart is our mindset of, ‘you can run your own business, even in this way”. Most of our inquiries are from people with 0 digital background and they feel intimidated or lost. We aim to really educate clients on best digital practices for their brands to make best decisions to get results.
As representative of the brand, I’m sure my team would agree that we’re proud of our progress in client leads and some completions, the short amount of time we’ve been around. We’ve had some highs, some lows but we’ve been able to keep the ball rolling and expanding with new partnerships and collaborations helping us reach some goals we’ve set.
Any advice for managing a team?
Keeping great energy and being excited about campaigns/projects is one thing we do a lot of at 3E. Giving everyone a voice at the table and truly hearing out ideas, being able to pivot with no type of extra weirdness after is one of the ways we’ve been able to maintain. The job/objective is important…respecting each other’s humanity when it comes to ideas (we all know a person who may get a little worked up in passion) is something that can really move the team forward.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Social Proof podcast has been my absolute favorite! I used to have a teacher named Ms. Waddell, she taught computer literacy and a business class. She would seemingly rip people’s projects apart in class, but she was really preparing us for, ‘the person who can give you the business loan needs to know these answers”. This podcast reminds me of this! They have a segment called the Hot Seat where business owners talk to the host about their business. The host plays devils advocate while giving a lot of great advice to the business owner. I’ve come across somethings on the channel that has opened my eyes to the advancing industry that we are apart of and how we can continue to differentiate and grow.
