We were lucky to catch up with Willow Li recently and have shared our conversation below.
Willow, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
That’s a great question! It’s interesting to think about what could have been.
If I could go back in time, there’s a part of me that wonders what it would have been like to start sooner. Maybe I could have captured a larger market share or gotten ahead of some competitors. However, the experiences I had before launching were critical. My previous jobs in recruiting and operations/strategy equipped me with the technical skills and leadership experience I needed to run an efficient organization. Having children also made me reliable the market opportunity. It also made me a better manager – it honed my time management skills and ability to prioritize.
I’m happy I launched when I did. All the challenges and learnings from my past roles made me a more well-rounded entrepreneur, and I wouldn’t trade that journey for anything.
I’m grateful for the journey, the people/clients I met and the knowledge I gained at each step. It’s made the business what it is today.

Willow, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At AyiConnect, we’re passionate about providing reliable & culturally sensitive in-home child & senior caregivers for families across the country, with a special focus on bridging the language gap. We understand the unique needs of families with children, aging relatives or those requiring assistance, and we bridge the gap by connecting them with caregivers who speak the language they prefer, and may share their cultural background.
My journey into this industry began when I first had my child and wanted my kid to immerse in my home language and expose to my home culture. After extensive market research, it became clear that there was a significant need for culturally competent caregivers for child care and senior care, especially for families who speak languages other than English.
AyiConnect addresses this challenge by offering a comprehensive in-home care service with a unique focus on language. We specialize in matching clients with caregivers who are fluent in languages like Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, ensuring clear communication and mutual understanding. This builds trust and fosters a more positive caregiving experience for both the client and the caregiver.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to cultural sensitivity. We go beyond language fluency by understanding the values, traditions, and preferences of different cultures. This allows us to provide care that is respectful and aligns with the family’s wishes.
We’re incredibly proud of the positive impact we have on families. We’ve seen how our services have given families peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are receiving care that is tailored to their specific needs and cultural background.
Here are the key things we want you to know about AyiConnect:
We prioritize client and caregiver matching based on language and cultural background.
We offer an app for self service, or concierge service for busy families to meet the individual needs of each client.
We are committed to providing exceptional customer service and ongoing support to both families and caregivers.
If you’re looking for in-home care that understands the importance of cultural sensitivity, look no further than AyiConnect.
We’ll help you find the perfect caregiver to provide your loved one with the care and respect they deserve.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Maintaining high morale starts with setting clear goals and expectations. Open communication is key to keeping everyone informed and aligned. However, it’s also important to empower your team members. Give them ownership of their projects, trust them to make decisions, and provide the flexibility and space they need to thrive.
Celebrating individual and team achievements goes a long way too.
Finally, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and supporting each other is crucial for long-term success. This is how you can create a team that’s not only productive but also highly motivated.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Absolutely! Two resources that significantly impacted my approach are Tim Ferriss’ books, particularly “The 4-Hour Workweek,” and Rob Walling’s podcast “Startups for the Rest of Us.” Ferriss’ emphasis on maximizing efficiency and streamlining processes resonates with me. The concept of “eliminating the trivial many” to focus on the “vital few” tasks helped me delegate effectively and free up time for strategic initiatives.
Rob provided valuable insights on bootstrapping a business. The idea of focusing on profitability first and minimizing reliance on outside funding aligns strongly with my belief in a resourceful approach, which I consider crucial for sustainable growth.
Beyond these, I’m also a big believer in Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” philosophy. Understanding the “why” behind our company’s mission and purpose not only motivates us internally but also attracts the right talent and customers who share our values.
These resources, combined with my own working experiences, have shaped my management and entrepreneurial philosophy. I believe in fostering a culture of collaboration, efficiency, innovation, and a strong sense of purpose.
