We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Wuillermin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Alright, Emma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I was hopping bakery jobs left and right, trying to find my way in this industry – what I liked most? I love being creative and spontaneous, and mix, matching flavors. So Farmhouse Confections actually got started by one cake I did for a family member’s birthday, and by word of mouth my business started..very quickly.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Having my own business and a storefront was never the plan – baking was just a hobby for me in high school, and it just eventually took off. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always loved baking and being creative, but I thought I would be working for someone other than myself. My business is 7 years young and to this day I am still learning tips and tricks on how to be an entrepreneur and running a full time micro business. I’ve met and become friends with lifelong customers, couples and other business women. I most be doing something right because I’ve been a part of huge milestones with my clients; weddings, baby showers, christening, first birthdays and so on. I love growing with them and being a part of their lives.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
After high school I was hopping cafe/bakery jobs trying to find my fit and as I was doing that I was baking cakes on the side for friends orders, and by word of mouth strangers started coming up to me asking for custom cakes. To a point I had to find my own space to work in because having to schedule my time with another commercial kitchen wasn’t cutting it for me anymore, and so I built my little bakery on my family farm.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I cannot give Instagram and Facebook enough credit. These two socials really help me connect with my clients and allows them to see what I am doing with quick updates.
